Chile no solo observa el universo: también está construyendo la próxima generación de descubrimientos astronómicos.

En entrevista con Cooperativa Ciencia, nuestro vicepresidente y representante en Chile, Oscar Contreras-Villarroel, abordó el avance del Telescopio Magallanes Gigante, que se está construyendo en el Observatorio Las Campanas, entre las regiones de Atacama y Coquimbo.

Con siete de los espejos más grandes del mundo y una nueva generación de instrumentos científicos, permitirá estudiar el universo con un nivel de detalle sin precedentes: desde atmósferas de exoplanetas y posibles señales de vida, hasta algunas de las grandes interrogantes sobre la materia oscura y la evolución del cosmos.

Durante la conversación, destacó el rol estratégico de Chile como plataforma mundial para la astronomía, las oportunidades que infraestructuras científicas de esta escala abren para el desarrollo regional, la formación de capital humano especializado y la importancia de proteger los cielos oscuros del norte del país: un patrimonio natural escaso y clave para la el desarrollo de la ciencia y el futuro del país.

Today, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) announced an increased investment in the Giant Magellan Telescope, bringing its total commitment to nearly $110 million and strengthening the Republic of Korea’s leadership as the project’s third-largest partner.

The investment advances the development of two next-generation scientific instruments and keeps the observatory on the critical path through the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Facilities Final Design Phase.
