Years ending in 6 are particularly poignant for us at the Nanka Kyudo Kai.

We are the offspring of the Los Angeles Kyudo Kai, which was formed as early as 1916 (110th anniversary in 2026).

The Los Angeles Kyudo Kai was officially revived in 1976 by Koen & Kiyomaru Mishima at the behest of Hirokazu Kosaka Sensei (who still leads the group today).

The Nanka Kyudo Kai was formed with permission from Kosaka Sensei in 1996 (30th Anniversary in 2026) at the behest if his student Rick Beal.

The Nanka Kyudo Kai was formed so that those in Southern California Kyudo community, who wanted to, could belong to the newly formed American Kyudo Renmei (the regional ANKF affiliate).

In 1983, JACCC Master Artist in Residence, Hirokazu Kosaka, shot the first arrow of “Kotohajime 事始め” 🏹

Meaning “the beginning of things”, the memorable 41st Kotohajime will celebrate 2024, the Year of the Dragon, with the theme Hatsu-Akebono (First Dawn). In Japan, dragons represent fortune and are also messengers of the gods. The Dragon symbolizes power, nobleness, and honor.

The 41st Kotohajime is funded in part by the generosity of The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation and the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), City of Los Angeles.
