👟Take a walk through fifteen decades of Pasadena history on Sunday, Sept. 13th.

Under freeway overpasses and behind commercial storefronts lie remnants of our bungalow past and what it meant to the people who inhabited these spaces. Originally sculpted by the construction of the railroad and later the 210 Freeway, this neighborhood tour offers an exclusive look into the relics of the past that outlive developmental changes.

Dividing both physical space and cultural identity, the construction of the freeway signified more than transportation development; but rather a monumental change in Pasadena’s community, where over 4,000 residents were estimated to be displaced, and where portions of Pasadena were severed from the rest of the city. In recognizing the relationship between physical space and cultural cohesion, we can better understand how urban development can forever change residential landscapes and alter the way we remember the past.

Join us as we walk through this neighborhood’s fifteen decades of evolution from railroads to freeways, to observe what these developments couldn’t erase, and to ask what a community owes to the spaces left behind.

🧵Roycroft Master Artisan and instructor Natalie Richards will lead a one-day workshop on Arts & Crafts embroidery on Saturday, September 5th at the Blinn House!

The class will be geared toward not only individuals new to embroidery but attendees that have taken previous embroidery workshops. The class will focus on perfecting prominent stitches present in historic Arts & Crafts textiles.

Each participant will receive a kit that includes linen with marked design, amble embroidery thread, hand-dyed silk thread, photographs, written instructions and illustrated instructions. The different stitches will be demonstrated in class followed by hands-on application with assistance from Natalie. Attendees will leave with the confidence to complete the embroidery project at home.

🚨 Section 106 is under attack!

Section 106 has long ensured that communities, preservation organizations, Tribal Nations, local governments, and the public have a voice when federally funded or federally permitted projects have the potential to affect historic places.
 
For example, when the Colorado Street Bridge underwent seismic rehabilitation, Section 106 review helped ensure its historic character was preserved while allowing critical safety improvements.
 
👉 What Could Change:
The proposed revisions would substantially reduce oversight and public participation in a number of ways.
 
👉 Why This Matters:
For nearly 60 years, Section 106 has helped communities identify significant historic resources, consider alternatives, and minimize unnecessary damage to places that define our shared history.
 
Weakening these protections shifts decisions away from local communities and preservation professionals while reducing transparency and accountability. Once a historic resource is lost, it cannot be replaced.
 
Preservation has always depended on informed citizens speaking up when historic places are at risk. This is one of those moments. Your voice can help ensure that future generations continue to benefit from a thoughtful, transparent process that values our nation’s historic and cultural heritage.

Did you know homes seeking relocation are often hidden in plain ‘site’?

The City of Pasadena’s website has a current list of houses available for relocation and includes a link with the details and criteria for moving these houses.

Older homes often have intricate details, woodwork, and tilework that are rare in today’s homebuilding. Every house that is preserved protects precious housing stock by offering opportunities to restore and reuse it.

This solution saves current homeowners thousands of dollars in demolition and waste haul-away costs. It also reduces the environmental costs of adding to the area’s landfills.

Pasadena and Altadena are encouraged as relocation sites by several companies who have dedicated their efforts to saving older houses slated for demolition and instilling historic character that was lost in the Eaton fire.

We encourage current homeowners who are considering developing their land, and demolishing the structures on that land, to consider this very viable option. We also encourage would-be buyers to look at available house-moving opportunities!

Join us on August 11th for a conversation on the relationship between historic preservation and affordable housing with speakers:

There’s a common misconception that historic preservationists work to freeze historic sites in time, creating static, museum-like spaces that critics blame for rising property costs and stalled development.

At the same time, affordable housing has become a prominent point of regional discussion, facing public dissatisfaction with current housing efforts in Los Angeles County. While the two fields are met with discontent, a new practice has begun to bridge the gap between preservation and housing. Adaptive reuse, the concept of repurposing buildings to create new, functional spaces outside its original purpose, has been adopted by preservation groups as a way to responsibly honor history.

This discussion explores a future where preservation meets housing solutions to offer innovative alternatives to affordable housing.
