🏠 FIRST TINY HOME DELIVERED!!! 🏠 Thank you to for providing another form of long term temporary housing for Eaton Fire survivors! We've now helped 40 families with long term temporary housing which includes direct leasing, rental subsidies, ADU's, and now tiny homes totaling over $1.2 million in long term temporary housing support.

🙌🏿 EATON FIRE DISPLACED RENTER TO HOMEOWNER!!! 🙌🏿 Norman was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia just a few blocks away from the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. His grandfather was one of the first black civil engineers in Atlanta and when he tried to purchase a home in the Midtown District he was denied because of redlining. Years later, he attended a party at a white co-worker’s house and he realized it was the house he was denied. It is because of racist policies like redlining that Norman’s family and many other black families have missed out on the generational wealth that a rapidly appreciating neighborhood and home would’ve provided.

His family taught him that education could be his pathway toward upward mobility so Norman worked hard in school and became a civil engineer. For the past 20 years he’s lived in and worked in the Pasadena and Altadena area as a civil engineer for NASA. He lost the home he was renting in the Eaton Fire and that’s when he heard about Greenline and our program prioritizing down payment grants for renters displaced by the Eaton Fire that want to purchase a home in the area. We've now awarded 3 down payment grants for Eaton Fire impacted renters totaling $183,250 for an average of over $61,000 per family and we’re pleased to announce that Norman is now a homeowner!

He says, “In America, real wealth is attributed to what an individual owns. Owning a home means I can provide sustained wealth for my family.“

As we help survivors of the Eaton Fire rebuild, restore, and remain in Altadena we’re reminded that we are just one spoke on the wheel to recovery. To recover from a disaster of this magnitude it takes many spokes from many spaces - non-profits, individuals, faith communities, the public sector, the private sector, and more thinking creatively and selflessly. One of those spokes is Eugene and Jay Brown of Brown Construction and Development. They’re the contractors for one of our rebuilding grant recipients and they are choosing people over profit to make rebuilding Altadena a reality. We got to interview them last week and here’s a snippet of what they said, “When a tragedy of this scale happens, we believe you have to respond with both professionalism and humanity. You cannot look at the situation only through a business lens. You have to ask yourself what is fair, what is workable, and what kind of example you want to set as a builder and as a member of the community. Construction is not only about lumber, concrete, and plans. It is about restoring stability, dignity, and hope. It is important to me that people are able to rebuild in Altadena because communities are strongest when families are able to remain rooted in the place they call home. Helping families rebuild preserves the fabric of the community.”

🛠 ALTADENA REBUILDING UPDATE!!! 🛠 One of our rebuilding grant recipients, the Campbell family, broke ground in April and their rebuild is rapidly progressing. The house is up, windows and siding have been installed, and painting is next! We're proud to help longtime residents rebuild, restore, and remain in Altadena.

🙌🏿 NEW HOMEOWNER ALERT!!! 🙌🏿 Cory was born in East Texas but moved to Stockton, California as a kid. His parents got divorced and he bounced around from apartment to apartment and from parent to parent making for a tough upbringing in a lot of ways. Cory’s own childhood inspired him to become an educator and help provide stability, mentorship, and hope for others. He’s been an educator in his school district for 28 years now impacting the lives of so many kids. He says homeownership for him and his wife has been a dream that felt unattainable despite their hard work and education, but with a down payment grant from Greenline, Cory and his family were recently able to make the dream of homeownership a reality. Congratulations Cory and family!

So far we've awarded 8 rebuilding grants totaling over $1.4 million for an average of over $180,000 per family to help bridge the gap between the funds Eaton Fire survivors have to rebuild with and what it will actually cost to rebuild. Many of our rebuilding grant recipients, including Bridgette pictured here, are well on their way to rebuilding and remaining in Altadena.

🙌🏿 NEW HOMEOWNER ALERT!!! 🙌🏿 Gloria was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. She got married and gave birth to three children in Bakersfield before moving to Sacramento to work for the state. In 2020, she retired and moved back home to Bakersfield. Having rented all of her life she found herself in a position last year where the house she was renting was sold and she had to quickly find another place to live. Not wanting to leave where she lives in the hands of others, she began to pursue homeownership and applied for a down payment grant from Greenline. She was recently awarded a $38,000 down payment grant making it possible for her to purchase in her hometown and have a place for her 10 grandkids to come and visit. Congratulations, Gloria!

🙌🏿 NEW HOMEOWNER ALERT!!! 🙌🏿 Before the fire, Sandra and her sons were longtime renters in Altadena. They had rented the same home for the past 25 years. The landlord was good to them and barely increased their rent and thus, they treated the house like their own home. This didn’t give them much incentive to pursue homeownership. Then the Eaton Fire swept through the community burning down thousands of structures, including Sandra’s rental.

Never wanting to feel like they weren’t in control of their own destiny again, Sandra and her sons began to pursue homeownership. Through our Eaton Fire Impacted Renters Down Payment Program, they applied and were awarded a $65,000 down payment grant to keep them in the area and get them on the pathway to homeownership. We are overjoyed to announce that they just purchased a home. Congratulations to Sandra and her sons!

Last week we were honored to take part in another groundbreaking ceremony for one of our rebuilding grant recipients, Miss Louise! We've been journeying with her for quite some time navigating her options to rebuild and we're so glad to see her project get under way so that her and her family can rebuild and remain in Altadena!

Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day for many Black Americans and while our country gets ready to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence in just a few short weeks, some in our government and society have been working hard to take away many of our freedoms that generations have fought for. We're reminded of these words from Coretta Scott King, “Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.”

As we near America’s big birthday, we’re also seeing a blatant attempt to erase and rewrite American history into a more sanitized and romanticized retelling. We're reminded of these words from Nikole Hannah Jones, “The history of slavery is the history of the United States. It was not peripheral to our founding; it was central to it. It is not irrelevant to our contemporary society; it created it.”

So as we celebrate Juneteenth today and get ready to celebrate America’s 250 years of independence in a few weeks, we recognize that the historical legacy of Juneteenth is that it shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. As an organization, that’s a value we hold onto, it’s in the very fabric of the work we do everyday, and we hold onto these words from Stacy Abrams, “This Juneteenth, we celebrate the emancipation of Black Americans and honor those who fought for this nation to live up to its founding ideals of liberty and equality for all. May we honor their legacies through action - building a world fueled by justice and steeped in equity.”
