Nematodes play an important role in nutrient cycling in agricultural soils. Some can be incredibly destructive to a number of crops. Some are guaranteed to give you the creeps! Planet Earth Observatory has been invited to Dr.Bao-Lam Huynh and his team of researchers at UC Riverside’s Department of Nematology to promote their aphid and nematode resistant long beans and cowpeas at their event on Oct22. We’ll be bringing two recipes to sample. Stay tuned.

“Samhain, the last gleanings before the lean months come in.
The last glimpse of autumn’s bounty before the Cailleach reveals her face.” — Grace Wells

The sacred festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-win”) marks autumn’s passing into the cold, dark winter months of the Celtic harvest calendar, symbolizing nature’s cycle of life, death and rebirth. Felling the leaves from the trees, Cailleach, the veiled embodiment of winter, ushers in the decay necessary for all regrowth to occur. 🍂

On Saturday, November 1, Planet Earth Observatory invites you to discover the macro- and microorganisms that enrich our soil. From 5 – 8 PM at , join us for a symbiotic evening of poetry, music, storytelling and more!

“When agriculture output is measured in terms of “Health per Acre” and “Nutrition per Acre” instead of “Yield per Acre,” biodiverse ecological systems have a much higher output. This should be the strategy for protecting the livelihoods of farmers as well as the right to food and right to health of all our people” - Dr. Vandana Shiva , “Organic Solutions to Hunger and Malnutrition”
