Azerbaijan acquired Artsakh by cutting its Armenians off from the world in a 10 month blockade, followed by bombs and drones, driving Artsakh’s indigenous people out in less than three nights. The Shusha Fortress is Shushi’s Fortress, built by Armenians to protect our land of 5,000 years. Artsakh State University is where students from all over came to learn and grow. The Parliament Building of Artsakh is where democracy thrived, working to defend the rights of the indigenous people of Artsakh. Artsakh is still alive, and we continue to work to defend the rights of everyone wrongfully driven out of their land, including our prisoners of war held in Baku, guilty of nothing but defending Artsakh.

On this day in 1983, five young Armenian men from Lebanon gathered to make a statement to the world. With the bombing of the Turkish Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, the Lisbon 5 sacrificed their lives to send a message: Turkey’s decades-long policy of denying the Armenian Genocide would not go unchallenged. Below is their full statement.

Հայ ժողովուրդի զաւակներն ենք մենք։
Բրտութեան դիմելու մեր որոշումը արդիւնք է թրքական պետութեան եւ անոր զօրավիգ կանգնող ուժերու կողմէ հայ ժողովուրդի արդար եւ խաղաղ պահանջները քննելու մերժումին։
Արհամարհանքն ու սինիզմը, զորս Թուրքիան եւ միջազգային հասարակութիւնը կը ցուցաբերեն Արդարութեան եւ Միջազգային Օրէնքներուն հանդէպ, մեզ աւելի եւս համոզեցին, որ մեր արդար Դատի հետապնդման համար մնացած միակ միջոցը զինեալ պայքարն է։
Տասնամեակներ ամբողջ հայերը սպասեցին, որ միջազգային արդարութիւնը լուծէ Հայկական Հարցը։ Հայերը քայլարշաւներ կազմակերպեցին, ցոյցեր ըրին եւ յուշագիրներ հասցէագրեցին Միացեալ Ազգերու Կազմակերպութեան եւ մեծ ուժերուն։
Բայց ո՛չ մէկ արդիւնք։ Շօշափելի ո՛չ մէկ արդիւնք՝ հայ ժողովուրդի քաղաքական եւ հողային իրաւունքներու ճանաչման ի խնդիր։ Մեր Դատին շուրջ բարձրացուած լռութեան պատը անխորտակելի ըլլալու չափ հաստ էր։
Այժմ, Հայկական Հարցը անտարբերութեամբ դիտելու եւ զայն խաղաղ միջոցներով լուծելու մերժումին պատճառով, որոշած ենք ստիպել Թուրքիան, որ ընդունի հայ ժողովուրդին հետ բանակցիլ՝ Հայկական Հարցը լուծելու համար։
Թող թրքական պետութիւնը եւ իր դաշնակիցները մերժեն ընդունիլ Ցեղասպանութեան եւ հայկական իրաւունքներու իրականութիւնը։

Թող միջազգային հանրային կարծիքը մեզ անուանէ արկածախնդիրներ, ոճրագործներ կամ ահաբեկիչներ։
Այդ բոլորը ո՛չ մէկ նշանակութիւն ունին մեզի համար։
Մենք գիտենք, թէ՝ ինչ կþընենք։ Գիտենք նաեւ, թէ ի՛նչ պէտք է ընել ապագային։
Ազատատենչ եւ յեղափոխական հայ երիտասարդութիւնը որոշած է նոյնիսկ ակնթարթ մը դադար չտալ թշնամիին։
Մեր ժողովուրդի ինքնորոշումը ապահովող միակ միջոցը զինեալ պայքարն է։ Կորսնցուցած ենք ամէն ինչ, նոյնիսկ մեր ինքնութիւնը, սակայն, բարեբախտաբար, տակաւին կը պահենք մեր յեղափոխականութիւնը։
Մենք որոշեցինք այս շէնքը օդը հանել եւ մնալ փլատակներուն տակ։
Անձնասպանութիւն չէ այս, ոչ ալ խելագարութիւն, այլ՝ մեր զոհողութիւնը՝ ազատութեան բագինին։
Կեցցէ՛ ազատատենչ հայ ժողովուրդը։
Կեցցէ՛ Հայկական Յեղափոխութիւնը։

📍The Azerbaijani Consulate building, 120 shoes to represent over 120,000 indigenous Armenians displaced from their homes in Artsakh in 2023. The faces of our hostages still in captivity along the walls.

Our POWs have been held in Azerbaijan for over 1000 days, seperated from their Homeland and family. For over 1000 days, the Armenian government has failed while Azerbaijan continues its terror. We, members of the AYF across the United States and Canada, stand together and demand the immediate release of our Prisoners of War and Political Prisoners in Baku.

June 29, 2026, marks the 1,000th day of illegal detention for many Armenian hostages held by Azerbaijan. While many have now endured more than 1,000 days in captivity, others have remained behind bars for more than 2,000 days. Politically targeted and captured during and in the aftermath of Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing of Artsakh because of what they represent: the Republic of Artsakh and the Armenian people’s right to live free and sovereign on their indigenous homeland — our hostages have been continually neglected by the current regime in Armenia, reflecting a deliberate unwillingness to advocate for those who embody Artsakh’s sovereignty and the Armenian people’s right to self-determination. The Armenian Youth Federation Western United States, Armenian Youth Federation - Youth Organization of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Eastern United States, and Armenian Youth Federation of Canada reaffirm our call for justice and the immediate release of Armenian hostages illegally held Azerbaijan in Baku.
