๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ ๐Ÿ“Martinโ€™s Bench can be found on Google Maps. Itโ€™s located along the scenic Arroyo Seco Trail in Pasadena. We recommend parking near the intersection of S Arroyo Blvd and California Blvd and taking the switchback trailhead by the stop sign down to the arroyo OR you can park at Lower Arroyo Park and follow the trail southward.

๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ\๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ can also be experienced at Martinโ€™s Bench on Wednesday 6-7pm and Saturday 3-5pm.

The Residency Project is pleased to present ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ\๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ: a site-specific sound installation by TRPโ€™s founding artist, Sarah Umles, in alignment with the 2025 LA Climate Week (April 6-13)!

Viewing schedule:
โ€ข Monday 4/7, 6-7pm at Martinโ€™s Bench (along the scenic Arroyo Seco Trail in Pasadena)
โ€ข Tuesday 4/8, 6-7pm at Desiderio Neighborhood Park (under the beautiful Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena)
โ€ข Wednesday 4/9, 6-7pm at Martinโ€™s Bench
โ€ข Thursday 4/10, 6-7pm at Desiderio Park
โ€ข Saturday 4/12, 3-5pm at Martinโ€™s Bench
โ€ข Sunday 4/13, 12-2pm at Desiderio Park

Umles premiered ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ\๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ in September last year at the inaugural LA Climate Week exhibition โ€œAt the Intersections.โ€ Now introducing the work into two alternating outside settings in Pasadena, she takes the sonic experience out of the gallery and into the outdoors. Visitors are encouraged to take in their built and natural surroundings, absorbing the sound of ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ\๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ as it inevitably becomes layered with other ambient noisesโ€”trees, traffic, birds, helicopters, and so forth.

Today we would have welcomed Lua Kobayashi, a California-based artist whose work in photo, video, and installation explores the hidden narratives embedded in objects, places, and people. Of Japanese-American and Uruguayan descent, she grew up feeling like an outsider in a predominantly white suburb, which sparked her fascination with the contrast between idealized facades and the untold stories hidden beneath them. Her practice delves into local histories, familial lineages, and Japanese-American experiences, drawing inspiration from her grandmotherโ€™s journey as a Nisei. Through uncovering these overlooked narratives, she illuminates the complex, interwoven histories that shape identity and community.

The latest: Everything isโ€ฆ not okay?? The Residency Project @ 880 is still standing in the wake of the Eaton Fire, and weโ€™re deeply grateful, especially given the devastating losses in our neighboring community. At the same time, the TRP team is facing our own challenges. Itโ€™s important to illuminate the wider fallout from the Eaton Fire and the January windstorm, because many in our community are facing similar struggles with no guidance and few resources.

TRP @ 880 needs a full roof replacement, and the smoke remediation process has been grueling. After six weeks of displacement, weโ€™re back, but only because the residency has been professionally deep-cleaned and hazmat treated. While weโ€™re fortunate to be back in our house, itโ€™s still under repair, and weโ€™re not able to host residents at this time. The future of TRP @ 880 is up in the air as we explore alternative spaces and program models that will work for us in this next chapter of life.

In the meantime, weโ€™re focused on supporting our neighbors and healing as a community. The broader fallout from the fire hasnโ€™t been fully acknowledged by officials, and many people in similar situations to ours are still under-resourced and under-recognized. To those in similar circumstances: We see you. We are with you. And to all who have reached out and/or donated to TRP: Thank you, thank you, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ for your support.

With love and hope,
Sarah Umles
