On New Year's Eve Italians eat lentils:

Lentils represent coins. Italians eat lentils on New Year in hope that the new year will bring them prosperity.

Fried cardoons, pizza, pork, roasted peppers, artichokes, antipasti , pasta, oranges, grapes , chestnuts and lots of cookies and pastries are a few of the traditional foods eaten on New Year's Eve.

One of my fondest memories of New Year's Eve as a kid is that at midnight everyone opened their doors and windows and banged on pots and pans, and made as much noise as possible to bring in the New Year. I was told that you have to open a door or window to let the bad luck out and make noise to scare away the evil spirits. You often heard shots being fired in good cheer. People threw out old stuff in hopes that they would have a prosperous new year to buy new.
Happy New Year!

Wishing all of our members and fellow Italian Americans a Buon Anno! 🎉🌍

Across Italy, New Year’s Day (Capodanno) is filled with rich traditions and joyful celebrations. Families and friends come together to enjoy festive meals, often featuring lenticchie e cotechino to symbolize prosperity and good fortune in the year ahead. In towns and cities from Rome to Naples, people welcome the first day of the year with music, dancing, and community festivities that bring everyone together. ✨🥂

Many Italians continue the celebrations by wearing red for luck and enjoying moments of togetherness to start the year on a positive note.

We can’t wait to embrace 2026, Italian style—with tradition, togetherness, and plenty of joy.

Buon Anno a tutti! 🇮🇹🎆

SANTO STEFANO: Did you know?

In Italy, Santo Stefano (December 26) is not about cooking all over again… it’s about slowing down.

It’s the day after Christmas, when the table is still full, the house smells like yesterday’s feast, and no one is in a rush.

We eat leftovers (the best ones 😌): lasagna, pasta al forno, roast meats, polpette, and whatever Nonna prepared too much of, on purpose.

It’s a day for family walks, long coffees, card games, and sitting back at the table saying: “Just one more plate…”

No pressure. No big plans. Just family, food, and time together.

This is Santo Stefano. Simple, warm and very Italian 🇮🇹❤️
