Anthony Fowler Foundation

Anthony Fowler Foundation Supporting families with children needing financial and or emotional assistance during a tragedy. Paying it Forward.

There are so many ways we can make the world a better place. What better way to start than as an individual in our own community. We can do something as simple as helping someone understand their homework, working together to build a dugout, or advocating for a family during a tragedy. We took our tragedy and made it an opportunity to give back by paying it forward. The number of family, friends,

and the community in general who rallied to support Anthony was so amazing, we were compelled to give back.

Today is known as my ‘day of giving hearts’. I use these mext 3 days annually to bring awareness to the most precious gift, organ donation. On Feb 13 Anthony’s brain stopped working and is his official date of death. We signed the papers for him to be an organ donor on February 14th and on February 16th he saved multiple lives and his heart stopped beating. If you haven’t already, sign up to be an organ donor. You won’t need them anymore. And remember to tell your loved ones it’s what YOU want to happen.

Today we celebrate Anthony’s born day. 🎉May 1 2000. He was physically on this earth for 12 years and has been gone now just as long. Traded out releasing balloons to planting a tree 🌳 to celebrate his life on May 1st. Oh of course the carrot cake later.
Happy ‘24’ Anthony.

2/16 the end and the beginning
Was written and lost before it saved. I’m having to rewrite the post.
We had waited all day 2/15 for the LifeSharing team. It was long and exhausting but it have us more time with Anthony. The surgery was scheduled late night. It is preferred with organ donation that the recipient’s surgeons be the one to remove the organs from the donor. This is an intricate logistical process with many variables affecting the timing. There wer a few delays but we looked at it as a way to have more time with Anthony. We were finally scheduled at midnight when the Cedars Sandi team was delayed flying in. President Obama was flying over the area and the airspace was restricted so we waited as all teams need to be present before they start the surgery.
Anthony was young and healthy so multiple people would be helped that night, including a teen on the same unit waiting for a kidney. Which we later found out went back to the same room Anthony was in and was cared for by the same nurses who cared for Antii hi by.
We we’re struggling to stay awake but we didn’t want to miss any last moment with Anthony. It was now into the morning hours of 2/16. The teams were all in the hospital and it was time. Colby was asleep and our friend volunteered to stay with him. I said no I want him to know later that he was a part of it all. We gathered at Anthony’s bedside to walk him to the OR. Immediate family and a couple friends, carrying his sleeping 4 yr old brother escorted Anthony to operating room doors. One last kiss goodbye as he went off to save the lives of multiple people. It was going to be hours of surgeries as each team did their job.
We went to pack up the pictures and belongings in Anthony’s hospital room we had held vigil in for 12 days and our belongings at Ronald McDonald House (a respite for us for those 12 days) and drive the hour home in the daylight 2/16.
I asked the family liaison to let me know when Anthony’s heart stopped. That’s when I consider Anthony’s death, the moment his caring giving heart stopped beating.
Anthony was able to donate his lungs, kidneys, pancreas and liver (5 people) He was big for his age so his heart was too big for a child and too small for an adult. He was able to donate his heart valves helping 2 more people. He also gave sight to two with his corneas.
The gifts he gave are the ultimate gift. In his honor, support the Ronald McDonald House and register to be an organ donor and share that decision with others so no one can take it away from you.

Mixed feelings of sadness and relief. The unknown is the worst feeling. It wasn’t the outcome we were hoping for, but at least we knew. We could start moving forward with a new focus of who Anthony will be able to help. I was working as a Case Manager, Utilization Review nurse for children with multiple illnesses, including children waiting for organ transplants. I had one waiting for a kidney and asked the coordinator to have Anthony worked up to see if they would be a match. Unfortunately they weren’t.
We had a little more time to spend with Anthony while they searched for matches. We decided to use it to reminisce and do some memory making. With the help of my friend we were able to utilize the support of Hospice who brought in the supplies to make ceramic molds.
The Hospice nurse had to go get more molds so we could all have one if we wanted. It was late and we were falling asleep at the bedside when she returned. She had to wake us up but she knew it was important to us. She stayed way beyond the time she was scheduled. We made molds of us each holding Anthony’s hand.
Child Life Specialists helped with nemory making of hand prints, locks of hair and thumbprints for a necklace. Family and friends visited giving us something positive to do while we waited. It was a long exhausting day that we didn’t want to end.
The resources and support we had were invaluable. We appreciated having them available. Learn more about them here:
