Here at MillarRich, we specialize in supports to individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities/Delays. We have recently been able to introduce employment support to children and youth in our Foster Care Program. We have had several youth participate in Supported Employment, where a Job Coach is partnered with each youth to help them learn skills that can lead to employment opportunities in the community. So far, MillarRich-served youth have worked at or volunteered with retail stores, pet care and rescues, public libraries, beauty salons, and book stores!

FORMER SMCH RESIDENT TRAINING TO BECOME AN ASTRONAUT

In 2015, Andrew Webb became a resident of the Smoky Mountain Children’s Home. It would become his home away from home for approximately 15 months.

During his time at SMCH, he struggled with motivation and almost gave up on his education. He was angry and would often punch holes in the walls of the cottage. However, it was his house parent, Pat Bressler, who provided encouragement to Andrew and challenged him to make something of his life.

Andrew remembers Mr. Pat saying, “We can help 100 kids, but if one makes it, then it is all worth it!” Suddenly a lightbulb went off for Andrew. His life seemed to change forever. Instead of failing in school, he started applying himself and started studying. He graduated from the SMCH campus Alpha school. After leaving SMCH, he joined the army for three years.

Fast forward to 2024, the trajectory of Andrew Webb’s life has taken a turn upward. Today, he is training to become an astronaut. He understands it is a long road ahead. Andrew is a graduate of the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) where he trained and studied astronautics with a focus on noctilucent cloud formations. Also, he has become the first American to complete the P.A.D.I. Astronaut Diver Distinctive Training.

Andrew Webb recently spoke at the SMCH All Staff Meeting, which included all the campus residents. Mr. Webb challenged the residents to never give up on their dreams. He later came back to share in several small groups. SMCH is proud of Andrew!

Holston Home for Children

Our ministry began in 1895 when a widow named Mrs. Elizabeth Wiley took a step of obedience and faith and answered the Lord’s call to start a home for hurting children. At that time there were no employees, no furniture, no supplies. But there was hope!

Over the past 27 years, Harmony has impacted thousands of lives...

Since 1996, Harmony has provided innovative programming and therapeutic services across the state of Tennessee impacting more than 172,000 children, families, and individuals. In partnership with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, we offer support for children and families at every phase of the foster care and permanency journey.

Harmony has always been committed to standing in the gap where there are unmet needs, which has led to the expansion of our services to include training our communities on the impact of trauma, animal-assisted therapies, outpatient services, and therapeutic camps at our Montvale facility. We are committed to continuing to create innovative opportunities for healing and growth so all may live their best lives 💙

We are so grateful to our staff and supporters who make this work happen every day. Check out our full 2023 Impact Report at harmonyfamilycenter.org/who-we-are/
