Pride of Baltimore Chorus

Pride of Baltimore Chorus We were a chorus of women from Maryland and the surrounding states who loved to sing! We also enjoyed the spirit of competition!

The Pride of Baltimore Chorus was a group of women who love to sing and perform. Singing in a ca****la barbershop style, we performed a variety of songs from the classics to current hits. The chorus was under the umbrella of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide non-profit organization. The chorus’s goal was to entertain our audiences with a highly charged and energetic performance. We’ve had

the pleasure of singing on stages like Carnegie Hall in New York City and Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. Locally, we’ve been seen performing at the National Postal Convention, the Baltimore Flower Show, Dedications at the Inner Harbour in Baltimore, and Caroling in Annapolis. Our chorus is proud to have earned many regional and international medals over its illustrious 20+ year history. Each year, we compete in annual regional competitions with other Sweet Adelines choruses. Regional competition winners are invited to compete in the Sweet Adelines International competition, held in cities around the world. Most recently, we’ve competed in Hawaii and Las Vegas! In the fall of 2017, we’ll be performing in Ireland. The chorus is always looking for new members to join us to “harmonize the world.” Interested women are encouraged to visit a rehearsal and learn more about our one-of-a-kind group. Pride of Baltimore Chorus started in 1994 with a few women who came together with one idea, and set forth to turn that dream into a reality. Little did they know then that dream would pave the way for hundreds of women to find friendship, to find joy, and to find the love of barbershop singing. Dreams need passion, fire, and drive to set the world ablaze. That force was the incomparable Janet Ashford, and Pride of Baltimore did just that. Set the world on fire.

I came to Pride shortly after Janet’s passing in 2009, and although I never had the privilege to meet her, her impact on my life is undeniable. She lit a spark, ignited a community, and created an opportunity that changed my life forever. Janet Ashford was a force that still lives on today in the resilience, tenacity, and voices of each of us who were lucky enough to stand on the risers of POB. Her spirit had not died, rather it grew inside all of us, creating a place that so many of us called home.

Pride of Baltimore continued to share their passion, fire, and music with those around us. We kept our fierce love of competition. We traveled the world. We collaborated and performed with some amazing local groups, and formed lifelong sisters. We created educational opportunities for the next generation. And we continued to create beautiful music together as a family.

However, all great things at some point come to an end. And just like in life, we come to a place in our journey where the road bends and we must leave home. Pride sadly dissolved its chapter in 2021. We take with us the lessons we learned, the friendships we made, and the experiences we had- forever shaped and changed by what we had within those walls.

As Pride prepared to close its doors we felt it was important to find a way to continue this lasting legacy. We wanted to spread and share what Pride had given to us- opportunity, passion, and fire. We are extremely happy to announce the formation of the following two Region 19 annual scholarships.

The Janet Ashford Scholarship for new directors

And the Pride of Baltimore Scholarship for new members to Sweet Adelines International

Each scholarship will be awarded $500 annually in perpetuity. Applications will open this summer and the recipients will be announced at Flash. These scholarships are set to be provided every year allowing the ideals and dreams of Pride and Janet to live on. While it’s a very bitter sweet goodbye we look forward to the new opportunities that these scholarships will provide Region 19. We leave Region 19 with not just a goodbye but rather a chance for the next someone to start their fire ablaze.

We end our chapter today with a wish. A wish for each of you to keep that passion alive, keep the music in your heart, and keep your dreams on fire.

Happy Birthday Sweet Adelines!

07/06/2020

Barbershop Music Appreciation Day, July 13, celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Sweet Adelines International in 1945. This year, on our 75th anniversary, the COVID-19 pandemic prevents many from gathering in person, so we’re taking the celebration online. (Include in your birthday celebration posts on Monday, July 13). And here’s more…
We know you have stories about being a Sweet Adeline. We want to hear them — and we want to see pictures! Between July 13 and Oct. 17, share your stories, memories, and reflections about the impact of barbershop music on your region, chorus, or quartet's social media page with so we can share via the Sweet Adelines social media channels.
Let’s harmonize the cyber world, Sweet Adelines…see you soon!
