Lyle William Winters Jr.
Parkland Fire Chief Lyle William Winters of St. Petersburg Florida, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026. He was 94 years old.
Born on July 29, 1931 in Philadelphia, he was the first born son of Lyle William Winters Sr. and Mary Caroline (Adams) Winters. Lyle was a lifelong resident of Lower Bucks County before retiring to Florida in 2002. Lyle was one of the first junior members of the Parkland Fire Company No.1 and a graduate of Neshaminy High School class of 1949 before enlisting in the United States Navy as a cook and Master-At-Arms at the US Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia. He proudly served from 1950 to 54 and was honorably discharged as a Radioman Class A. His most significant duty was with the Tactical Air Control Squadron 4 where he tested communications methods and equipment on various naval vessels. During his time in service he furthered his education with a certificate in Auto Mechanics and was a firefighting instructor of new recruits at the Great Lakes Naval Station Fire School in north Chicago, Illinois.
Once separated from military service, Lyle returned to Bucks County where he made a living as an auto body mechanic and dedicated himself to provide community services in Parkland and Bucks County while serving in all volunteer line positions including Rescue Chief, Chief Engineer and President (1964-1972) of the Parkland Fire Co. No.1. Chief Lyle Winters was elected Chief of the Parkland Fire Company in 1973 and served until 1982. One of his proudest accomplishments was when he recognized a new cutting edge idea in fire and rescue. He became highly involved with and persuaded the Parkland Fire Co. to beta test the only surviving number 002 of 004 prototypes of the Hurst Power Rescue Tool (Jaws of Life). This advancement in being able to extricate people from a vehicle by removing the vehicle from the victim has saved countless lives and made the Parkland Fire Co No. 1 “First with the Hurst”. Throughout his volunteer firefighting career, Lyle helped to found, served on boards and participated with many fire and rescue related organizations including Skyline Fire District Association, Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad 168, Middletown Township Housing and Urban Development Advisory Board, Bucks County Fire Chiefs Association, Bucks County Fireman’s Association, and the Bucks County Fireman’s Training Center to name a few.
In 1982 Lyle left the auto body business when he qualified to become the first full-time paid fire marshal for Middletown Township. He also headed the Local Emergency Planning Committee for Bucks County and served on the State of Pennsylvania Fireman’s Legislative Committee. He served in that capacity until he fully retired in 1998, continuing his involvement as a life time member with the Parkland Fire Co. until his death.
He became a full-time resident of St. Petersburg, Florida in 2011. He kept busy in retirement by playing golf, watching baseball and spectator sports, testing his luck at the casinos and traveling with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving children and step-children: Lylene Barner of Florida, and Elaine Yorty, Sandra (John) Robertson, and Chryl Geiser of Pennsylvania, Martin (Mary) Lisan of Florida and William Painz of Pennsylvania. Grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Gerald Moore of New Jersey, Caitlin Yorty (Darin), and Kyle Yorty of Pennsylvania; Jason Lisan of Maryland, Michelle Lisan of Florida, Angel (Robert) Rhubart and Billy Painz of Pennsylvania, great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and close friends. Loving father of the late Brian Winters, wives Bernice (Rayzis) Winters, Eileen (Painz) Winters, Hilda (Sareyka) Winters, and dear brother of the late Mae Grafenstine, Rose McNatt, Marion Craig, Edward Winters and Elizabeth Winters.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Fireman’s Viewing at James O. Bradley Funeral Home, 260 Bellevue Avenue, Penndel, Pa on June 30, 2026 beginning at 4pm. The Fireman’s Prayer will be read at 6:30 pm followed by family and friends sharing their memories. All are welcome back to the Parkland Fire Co, 831 Avenue D, Parkland, Pa for light refreshments.
Lyle will be cremated, and later interred with a Naval Military Honors Burial at Sea. There will be no funeral service.
