To wrap up National Police Week for 2026, tonight, the WCDSA held their annual awards ceremony to recognize numerous Deputy’s within the department for their distinguished service. Each year, members of the WCDSA select a Deputy and Citizen of the Year. This year, the members selected Detective Leslie Board as the Deputy of the Year. Detective Board is a crucial member of the Wood County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau, and is known for her incredible interviewing and investigative skills. Detective Board often works the difficult task of investigating crimes against children, which are often discouraging to listen to. Detective Board leads by example by ensuring she is dedicating countless hours to her cases and bringing justice to our children! Detective Board always takes time out of her busy day to listen to us vent on our bad days, and makes sure we are always laughing by the end!
This year’s Citizen of the Year was awarded to IT Systems Administrator Greg Brogdon. Greg is another crucial, and often overlooked member of the Sheriff’s Office. Greg spends his days keeping our department online, storing valuable evidence, assisting with search warrants on devices, and helping us Deputy’s fix issues on our computers. We aren’t sure where we would be without Greg, but it would likely involve handwritten reports and sending documents via carrier pigeon! Greg is also a wizard with his 3D printer and can make just about anything imaginable.
Sheriff Woodyard also presented numerous awards to various Deputy’s for their valiant dedication to this job and who had stood out amongst their peers this past year. The list goes as follows:
• Detective Forshey - Distinguished Service Award
• Sgt. Phillips, Sgt. Waters, Sgt. Swiger, Deputy Thornburg, and Lt. Windland - Meritorious Service Award
• Sgt. Fridenstine & Deputy Turner - Life Saving Award
Congratulations to all!
