🚨HUMAN REMAINS FOUND DURING SEARCH WARRANT🚨

Big Chimney, WV –On May 15, 2026, members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence located at 355 Offutt Drive in Big Chimney, West Virginia, in connection with the missing person investigation involving 16-year-old Shayln Harvey.

Since being reported missing on May 4, 2026, detectives have been conducting interviews, collecting evidence, and following up on numerous leads, which ultimately led investigators to obtain a search warrant for the property. The search was conducted with the assistance of cadaver K-9 teams from WV K-9 Search and Rescue as part of the ongoing investigation.

During the search, investigators discovered female human remains on the property. The remains will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for positive identification and further examination.

At this stage of the investigation, no additional information will be released pending confirmation of the identity of the remains.

Chief Sean Snuffer stated:
“I want to commend the work of our Patrol Division and Detective Bureau throughout this investigation. This is not the outcome anyone hoped for in a missing person case, but we hope this development may provide some measure of closure to the family and friends.”
Additional information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate to do so.

THIS IS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION

The Disappearance of Chandice Cochran

The hills of West Virginia have a way of holding onto secrets. Dense woods press close against narrow roads and small communities where everyone seems to know everyone else. When something goes wrong in a place like that the silence can feel heavy. Sometimes the truth disappears into those hills and stays there.

That is what happened to Chandice Rebecca Cochran.

On August 20, 2019, Chandice walked out of her mother’s home in Sutton, West Virginia and left a short handwritten note behind. The message sounded calm and ordinary. She wrote that she had taken off for a little while and that she was in good hands. She said she would be back shortly.

She never returned.

Later that day Chandice was picked up by a man named Kristopher Speas. The two went to the Birch River area in Nicholas County. The region is quiet and rural with long stretches of wooded land and winding roads that disappear into the hills. It is the kind of place where a person can vanish without many witnesses.

Reports say the two spent time at a residence connected to a man named Sam Kelly. Hours passed as the afternoon faded into night. At some point around midnight Chandice and Speas were seen leaving the property on foot.

After that moment the story begins to break apart.

The next morning Speas was found walking alone along Widen Dille Road. Chandice was gone. No one has reported seeing her since.

Speas later told investigators that he had been high on drugs and could not remember what happened during the night. His explanation raised more questions than it answered and the timeline surrounding those final hours remains unclear.

One detail that has drawn attention is a disagreement between statements about what was happening at the property that night. Speas reportedly claimed that a cream colored sport utility vehicle was present at the location where they had been. According to Sam Kelly that claim is not true and he stated that there was no such vehicle there.

That contradiction leaves an open question about who may have been present that night and whether more people were involved in the events leading up to Chandice’s disappearance.

There are also troubling details from the days just before she vanished. Two days before she went missing Chandice reportedly expressed fear for the safety of someone close to her. Something had clearly been weighing on her mind. Yet shortly before she disappeared her mood appeared to change. She seemed calmer and more relaxed and even happy according to those who saw her.

Sometimes when fear suddenly turns into relief it can mean someone believed a problem had been solved or that help had arrived. In cases like this investigators often look closely at those emotional shifts because they can reveal what a person believed was happening in their final days.

The only physical clue that surfaced later was Chandice’s purse containing her identification. It was discovered in a wooded area. Her phone and other personal items were never recovered.

Years have passed since that August night but the mystery remains. Authorities continue to investigate and the possibility of foul play still hangs over the case. In May 2024 investigators searched a property in Clay County after receiving new information. The search brought renewed hope that answers might finally come to light but nothing was found.

For Chandice’s family the passing years have only deepened the silence left behind. In small Appalachian towns people remember faces and stories and Chandice’s absence has never faded from memory.

Somewhere in the hills of West Virginia the truth about what happened that night still exists. Whether hidden in the woods or locked inside someone’s memory it remains the missing piece of a story that has never been finished.

Until that truth is uncovered the disappearance of Chandice Cochran remains one of the quiet mysteries of the Appalachian mountains. Small town mysteries Mountain State Mysteries Christy Hunter Becky Cochran

Austin Appelbee, a teenager in Western Australia, survived a terrifying four-hour swim after he and his family were swept out to sea near Quindalup.

With no way to return to shore, his mother made the painful decision to send Austin to find help as darkness approached.

Austin swam about four kilometers through strong waves, abandoning a damaged kayak and even removing his life jacket when it slowed him down.

He later told the BBC that prayer, Christian songs, and thoughts of his family kept him going.

“I don’t think it was me who did it — it was God the whole time,” he said. “I kept praying and praying, and I said to God, ‘I’ll get baptized, I’ll get baptized.’”

After collapsing on shore and calling for help, Austin learned hours later that his mother and siblings were rescued alive after drifting nearly 14 kilometers offshore.

A toddler punished for a book.

According to human rights reports, authorities in North Korea sentenced a two year old child to life imprisonment after the child’s parents were found in possession of a Bible. Religious texts not approved by the state are considered illegal, and Christianity is treated as a direct threat to the regime.

The parents were arrested, and under the country’s system of collective punishment, the child was reportedly sent to a prison camp alongside them, despite having no understanding or involvement in the alleged offense.

You won’t believe how many colors a squirrel can wear.

Meet the Malabar giant squirrel. It lives high in the forests of India, where the light is soft and the trees feel endless. It’s shy. It’s fast. And when the sun hits its fur, you see maroon, orange, cream, even hints of purple. It looks like a little ember moving through the canopy.

This squirrel is only found in India. You can see it in the Western Ghats, parts of the Eastern Ghats, and pockets of central India. It spends almost all of its life in the treetops, leaping from branch to branch and keeping a careful eye on the ground below.

It’s big for a squirrel. Head to tail, it can stretch close to a meter. That long tail works like a tightrope walker’s pole, helping it balance in the high canopy.

Food is simple and seasonal. Fruits, flowers, seeds, and tender bark. Sometimes it tucks snacks into tree hollows like a secret pantry. It’s a quiet gardener of the forest, spreading seeds as it moves.

Seeing one is a small rush of joy. It freezes for a moment, ears forward, then glides to the next branch like a brushstroke of color. You hold your breath, hoping for one more look.

Forests are its shield. When the woods are healthy, these squirrels thrive. When forests are cut or broken, they fade away. If you ever walk those trails, listen for leaves rustling above. Look up. You might catch a flash of maroon and cream, and feel lucky the rest of the day.

In Japan, people who get to work early often choose to park farther away from their office so that those who are running late can find a closer spot and make it on time. It’s such a small act of kindness that can make everyone’s day a little easier.
