For years, a hidden and illegal horse meat trade operated in the shadows—fueled by stolen horses, falsified paperwork, and a total disregard for animal welfare.

Countless horses were neglected, trafficked, and slaughtered with little to no oversight, often spending their final moments in fear and suffering.

Now, a new law is strengthening enforcement, giving authorities greater power to dismantle trafficking networks, protect vulnerable horses, and hold those responsible accountable.

Why this matters is simple: horses are not commodities. They are companions, workers, and symbols woven deeply into human history and family life. Treating them as disposable goods is cruelty, not tradition.

Animal welfare advocates say this is long overdue. While it won’t end exploitation overnight, it could lead to more rescues, fewer horses sent to slaughter, and a meaningful shift toward safety, humane treatment, and dignity.
