Baby birds are precious and this one is an exception, because it is the first recorded photo of a newly hatched Black-capped Chickadee. This tiny new life weighs as much as a raisin and is just slightly bigger. It’s a gift to witness this miracle of nature.

Thank you, Jane Miller for sharing this fascinating and adorable video of an Eastern Bluebird female building a nest. The process is the same for our Mountain Bluebirds except they use dried grasses rather than pine needles. It will take her up to 5+ days to build the nursery.
I chuckle at her intense look up at the camera. So, very cute.
Enjoy!

Dashing Mountain Bluebird males will sit on top of the box they have claimed as their home for the nesting season, defending it from challengers.

Spring arrived early, very early as we all know. This change in climate did not go unnoticed by the creatures we care about our beloved Mountain Bluebirds. They migrated about 3 weeks earlier than normal, arriving approximately March 2nd. In addition, other species are also migrating prematurely. Hopefully, the nesting season produces a good number of offsprings, but only time will tell.

Hard working volunteers are what make this project successful. Leslie Masters & Bob Martin are moving a couple of nesting boxes that have been crowded by expanding mountain biking trails which created a dangerous environment for the birds. Now the nesting pairs will have plenty of space to raise their families. Salute to you both.

In the fall of 1995 a group of people got together and volunteered to put up nesting boxes for mountain bluebirds. That momentum has continued ever since with a host of people who made this conservation project a success. This post is a tribute to them, photo or not.

Nesting birds have many predators, especially those who nest on the ground and in the trees. But, did you know that nesting boxes can also attract predators. On our trails we have just one, and that is the Short-tailed Weasel. It is nature’s way of keeping things in balance.
