Summit County just launched something families should know about.

Strong Starts, launched by the Summit County Health Department, is a new program that connects families with children ages 0–8 to in-home nurse visits. The program serves families who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicaid, and visits are guided entirely by what each family finds helpful, whether that's developmental screenings, postpartum mental health support, or connections to local resources.

Every young child deserves a story to call their own and we are working to make that possible for families across Utah.

Early Childhood Alliance has been a proud funder of the program in Summit County, making participation completely free for local families. As coverage continues to grow across the state, the hope is that every Utah child will one day have access.

For many Utah parents, childcare isn't just expensive. It's reshaping careers, family planning, and everyday life.

A recent Salt Lake Tribune article by Samantha Moilanen follows families navigating costs that, for some, exceed their monthly rent or mortgage.

"It's such a financial burden on its own, and it's such a stress finding high-quality childcare solutions that feel safe for your kid." said Kathryn Macdonald-Poelman, Utah mother of three.

These stories are worth hearing. Read the full article:

The Economic Policy Institute released a state-by-state breakdown of child care costs across the country, and the findings are striking. Child care for one infant costs more than public college tuition in 38 states, and more than rent in 17 states, making it one of the biggest expenses families face.

As Economic Policy Institute researcher Katherine deCourcy states, "Federal and state policymakers can and should act to make child care more affordable, and ensure that child care workers can afford the same quality of care for their own children."

The Harvard Graduate School of Education is asking: should childcare be seen as a right, akin to public education, libraries, or roads, where society has a vested interest in supporting the family?

Child and family policy expert Elliot Haspel makes the case for universal childcare in America and what it will take to get there. He argues that the childcare crisis affects every American, regardless of whether they have children, because of its deep ties to economic stability, gender equity, and societal well-being.

"Childcare is the workforce behind the workforce. When it disappears, parents leave jobs, businesses lose employees and communities lose economic stability." - Sarah Stone, Care For Kids director.

In her op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune (), Stone explains how the childcare industry is at a breaking point with rising costs, burned-out teachers, and licensed programs closing faster than families can find alternatives.

Childcare is infrastructure.

A groundbreaking new study confirms what many families already know: early intervention works. Children who received occupational, physical, and speech therapies before age 3 outperformed their peers on third grade reading and math tests years later.

"She is running, dancing, chasing siblings — all because of the amount of time we poured into therapies at a very young age." — Jaclyn Vasquez, Chicago mother.

The research is a powerful reminder of why investing in our youngest community members matters so much. Read the full story in the Hechinger Report's Early Childhood newsletter: https://bit.ly/hechingerreportnewsletter
