Did you know The Garden Club of Kentucky, Inc. has a beautiful state headquarters in Paris, Kentucky? The Greek revival style house was built in 1851 and showcases many of the original details.
During the fall cleanup on the grounds of the Nannine Clay Wallis House, shovels were busy working in the foundation plantings at the entrance when "clang!", a spade hit something solid. GCKY President, Sharon Burcham realized she had found a long forgotten piece of history, the trough (now we refer to them as splash blocks) to draw water from the downspout away from the foundation. This historic artifact was commonly created using limestone for its durability and appearance. You can see from the photographs these appear to be natural stone. The troughs had been buried under dirt and debris (including a large, overgrown and gnarly boxwood that was hiding this treasure beneath its roots)! Ever curious, Sharon brought her shovel to the opposite side of the front porch and found another trough directly under the downspout on the porch column. After a long day, this discovery drew everyone together with happy conversations about the find.
How exciting to find a long forgotten, yet important feature of this impressive home!
