Was reminded of a passage today and it blew me away!
“And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.”
Acts 1:26
This is the story of where they were deciding who should be the 12th apostle and it came down to two names, so they rolled the dice so to speak, to see who would be the lucky one. The relied on “lots” or chance and “signs” for direction. It reminded me of when people asked Jesus for a sign, he was like “nope”, He said the only sign you’re getting is the sign of Jonah, speaking of His resurrection.
In Acts 1:26 this would be the last time lots were mentioned. Why? The next verse Acts 2:1 tells you:
“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.”
Acts 2:1-2
Enter the stage, the Holy Spirt.
No more are the days when we look for signs or cast lots, “God, if this thing happens, then I know it’s you.” Instead we have the Holy Spirit living on the inside: leading, teaching, comforting, advocating, reminding. We lean on the unseen Holy Spirit rather than the visible external to determine and guide our life. Let’s not mistake “casting lots” as being led by His Spirit, rather trust in the person of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you.
