The Exodus story is perhaps the most important story in the whole Old Testament. And the important thing to remember about it is that it wasn’t only for the Jews. Yes, the children of Israel were the ones being rescued from slavery, but God rescued them for the sake of all humanity.

That’s why on Mount Sinai, after the children of Israel betrayed God by making a golden calf, Moses was able to convince God not to kill them all. God had just rescued them and they were giving credit to an idol. He wanted to destroy them and start over with Moses. But Moses asked God what the Egyptians would think.

God knew that if He rescued the children of Israel only to destroy them at the beginning of their journey then the nations would see Him as a wrathful, murderous God rather than a mighty, heroic God. The point of the whole Exodus story was to draw the nations to God, and Moses knew that!

Your biggest problem in life is sin. That’s the message of our second Roman Road passage, Romans 6:23. It tells us that sin is a problem because sin leads to death. All sin. No matter how big or small. All of it leads to eternal punishment.

But there’s good news! Jesus offers us eternal life as a gift. We deserve death, but the grace that we’re offered through the Gospel is the opposite of that.

Sin is the biggest problem you’ll ever have in life—bigger than financial troubles, family squabbles, or health issues. Sin is the root cause of every other problem you have. Jesus is the solution!

Missions is a lot older than you think. In fact, God’s mission started all the way back in Genesis.

After the fall of man (Genesis 3), God started His mission to save humanity. He said that He was sending someone—a child of Eve—who would crush evil at its head. Then, as the story progresses, that doesn’t happen…. Hundreds of years pass and things just get worse and worse to the point where God nearly wipes out all of humanity with the flood. Then something interesting happens.

In Genesis 12, God called a man named Abraham (Abram at the time) to join His mission. He said that if Abraham would follow Him then He would make Him a great nation, bless him, and that the person who’s supposed to crush evil would be one of his descendants. Abraham was being called to be the first missionary!

Another way of putting it is this: God told Abraham that He would bless him so that he could be a blessing. That is the role of the missionary today. We’ve been blessed with the Gospel so that we can go out and share it with others!

Everyone has failed to follow God at one time or another. Maybe you didn’t fail as bad as some other people you know, but odds are that you have failed at some point in life. In fact, the Bible literally says that.

Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone has failed. We had the option to follow God’s rules (to love Him and our neighbors) but at some point all of us decided to play by our own rules instead. Because of that we have fallen short of God’s glory and aren’t able to enter into His presence. I want you to think about that for a while. None of us deserve heaven because all of us have sinned.

This is part of a series that I’m doing over the Roman Road. But don’t worry! This is probably the most depressing lesson out of all of them! Keep watching these videos and you’ll discover how you can be saved from those sins that we all have!

Most people spend their lives looking for that thing that they’re meant to do. They’re calling, if you will. Am I supposed to get this job? Marry this person? Live in this place? Is this what I’m meant to do? All of us ask those kinds of questions at one point or another, but the answer is actually a lot simpler than we think.

If you want to know what your calling is, look no further than Jesus’ words in the great commission. Jesus says we are to make disciples and proclaim the gospel. That’s your calling. The question of how you’re supposed to do it really depends on you and more specifically the opportunities you have. Each of us are blessed with our own unique experiences and opportunities, whenever we use those opportunities to share the Gospel we have fulfilled our callings.

We’ve got big plans for this summer. We’re partnering with four other ministries to give our interns a taste of what it’s like to work in several different ministry fields. Our students will get experience working in online ministry, college ministry, inner city ministry, and will even have the opportunity to go on a simulated mission trip.

Because we’re partnering with other ministries, it’s important that we’re able to give them as much information as possible in a very timely manner. Therefore, we’re setting a deadline for sign-ups to this program. We need to know who our students will be by Saturday, April 18, in order to share that information with our partners.

So if you’ve been mulling over the idea of being a MAP intern this summer, but you haven’t contacted us yet, now’s your moment. There’s not much time left!

Finally, the wait is over!

For three days, the disciples were in agony thinking that their lives were over. Jesus had changed them, but then some of them—thinking that everything He taught them was for naught—went back to life as it was before. For three days, the Pharisees schemed thinking that Jesus’ disciples might try to steal His body and claim it as miraculous. For three days, Mary wept.

Then, whenever some of the women, who had been following Jesus, went to the tomb to make sure that He was properly buried, they discovered something wonderful. Jesus was not there at all! An angel told them that He had been raised, Mary Magdalene even had a conversation with Jesus Himself. Still they were shocked and confused. They went to the disciples with this news, and they too were confused.

Perhaps the most amazing part of Jesus’ resurrection is the way that it changed the lives of everyone involved. Two of the disciples were walking from Jerusalem to a town called Emmaus under this sort of confusion when they met Jesus on the road. Not knowing it was Him, they described their disillusionment and worry over everything that had happened over the last week. They walked all the way to Emmaus discouraged, then when they discovered that they had been walking with Jesus, they immediately turned around and went back to Jerusalem just to tell the other disciples.

Thomas, after seeing the holes in Jesus’ hands and side proclaimed that Jesus was his Lord and his God! Peter, who had denied Jesus before His death, preached His name boldly—facing imprisonment and persecution—after His resurrection. All of the disciples who scattered when threatened with death in Gethsemane courageously faced horrifying deaths on Jesus’ behalf.

The resurrection changes people. That’s it’s power. That’s its purpose. Will you let the resurrection change you?

I have a recommendation for you. Before you go to church tomorrow, before you celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, maybe even before you start the day, take a moment for silence. It can be as short as a minute or as long as ten, but just take a moment to be silent and to clear your mind. Don’t distract yourself with what you’re going to do on Easter Sunday, don’t distract yourself with anything. Just be quiet. Silent.

Why? Because silence is what the world was experiencing just before Easter Sunday. Between the Old and New Testaments there are four hundred years of this kind of silence. For centuries, the prophets had preached God’s word to the people, miraculous signs had been taking place, and God’s presence had clearly been in Israel, but when the Old Testament ended silence came.

That silence didn’t end until the angel Gabriel came to announce the birth of John the Baptist. For four hundred years, there had been silence and then, all of a sudden, that silence was broken by the announcement that John—who was the forerunner of Jesus—was coming into the world. To put things into perspective you could say that the silence was broken because of Jesus. Immanuel was coming into the world. God would be with us, and so the silence was broken. The silence started again on Friday.

When Jesus died, some pretty amazing, miraculous things happened then, all of a sudden, silence. God stopped moving, stopped speaking. For all intents and purposes, oHe was dead. That’s what Saturday is all about. Jesus was in the tomb. Nothing was happening. All was silent.

Things didn’t look very good on Friday.

Imagine yourself from the apostles’ perspective. You’ve lived the last three years of your life following a single individual. All of your hopes and dreams rest on His shoulders. You have seen Him perform miracles that you can’t explain except by saying that He must be the Son of God! You have heard Him teach about the kingdom that He’s come to inaugurate and you can only assume that you will be a leader in this new kingdom. You know that, despite the fact that you’ve been destitute for the last three years, soon you will have riches and honor beyond imagination. The prophets waited for centuries for this man to come, and when He came, He chose you as His follower! Then He died.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, you must have assumed that He would do something. You saw His power displayed before those who came to take Him, you knew that He had the power to fight them off, to defend Himself. But He didn’t. He let Himself be carried away. And you ran away scared.

Then He went on trial. You knew, of course, that He was innocent. Everyone knew that He was a good man, a man who deserved no punishment. But you’ve heard that at His trial He didn’t even bother to defend Himself. In fact, the one thing He did say was incriminating enough for the high priest to take the case to Pilate.

Pilate knew, like everyone else, how weak the case against Him was. The only problem was the people. By this point, the people who had shouted, “Hosanna!” as He rode into town on Sunday had been worked up into an angry mob shouting, “Crucify Him!” Pilate wanted nothing to do with this, in fact, you heard that he told the crowds he was “washing his hands” of it before he allowed the Messiah to be crucified.

There was still hope, you knew. He had healed others, He had performed miracles, He should be able to save Himself. But, instead, He hung there for hours. In spite of yourself, you waited to hear that everything was all right. You waited to hear that He had come down from the cross and started a formal assault against Rome.

Instead, you’ve just heard this news: Jesus is dead. Your only hope is gone. This Friday isn’t looking good at all.
