Things didn’t look very good on Friday.
Imagine yourself from the apostles’ perspective. You’ve lived the last three years of your life following a single individual. All of your hopes and dreams rest on His shoulders. You have seen Him perform miracles that you can’t explain except by saying that He must be the Son of God! You have heard Him teach about the kingdom that He’s come to inaugurate and you can only assume that you will be a leader in this new kingdom. You know that, despite the fact that you’ve been destitute for the last three years, soon you will have riches and honor beyond imagination. The prophets waited for centuries for this man to come, and when He came, He chose you as His follower! Then He died.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, you must have assumed that He would do something. You saw His power displayed before those who came to take Him, you knew that He had the power to fight them off, to defend Himself. But He didn’t. He let Himself be carried away. And you ran away scared.
Then He went on trial. You knew, of course, that He was innocent. Everyone knew that He was a good man, a man who deserved no punishment. But you’ve heard that at His trial He didn’t even bother to defend Himself. In fact, the one thing He did say was incriminating enough for the high priest to take the case to Pilate.
Pilate knew, like everyone else, how weak the case against Him was. The only problem was the people. By this point, the people who had shouted, “Hosanna!” as He rode into town on Sunday had been worked up into an angry mob shouting, “Crucify Him!” Pilate wanted nothing to do with this, in fact, you heard that he told the crowds he was “washing his hands” of it before he allowed the Messiah to be crucified.
There was still hope, you knew. He had healed others, He had performed miracles, He should be able to save Himself. But, instead, He hung there for hours. In spite of yourself, you waited to hear that everything was all right. You waited to hear that He had come down from the cross and started a formal assault against Rome.
Instead, you’ve just heard this news: Jesus is dead. Your only hope is gone. This Friday isn’t looking good at all.
