Imagine being a small animal suddenly confronted by something dozens of times your size. You don't know whether that giant creature intends to eat you, step on you, grab you, or simply walk past.

Your best chance of survival is to make yourself look intimidating enough that the threat decides you're not worth the trouble.

That is what defensive behavior is all about.

A snake's defensive display is a warning: “Please give me some space.” It is an attempt to avoid a physical confrontation.

Most kids learn about piranhas from movies. This one learned from YouTube, and it saved the day on a fishing trip.

Seamus Coffey felt something big tugging on his line and figured he already knew what it was. "I'm reeling it in, and I think there's a bass," he said. His dad, Michael, egged him on carefully. "Slow down, dude, you might lose it. This looks like something we haven't caught before."

They were fishing at Ridley Park Lake, about 20 miles from Philadelphia, on the morning of August 8. When Seamus finally pulled his catch out of the water, Michael took one look at it and had no idea what he was looking at. "I was like, 'Oh, this is a bluegill, I don't know what this is,'" he recalled.

Seamus knew immediately. "It's a piranha!" he said.

Asked how an 8-year-old identified a South American freshwater predator on sight, standing at the edge of a suburban Pennsylvania lake, Seamus had a simple answer: "Because I watch YouTube!"

Michael shared photos of the catch on Facebook, the fish's sharp, barbed teeth and bright orange belly unmistakable in the images. "At this point you can't put anything past Seamus," he wrote. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission got involved shortly after, with biologists confirming what Seamus had already figured out on his own: it really was a piranha, weighing in at two pounds.

The bigger question wasn't how a kid identified a piranha from YouTube. It was how a piranha ended up in a lake outside Philadelphia in the first place. Commission spokesperson Mike Parker explained that the fish was almost certainly a released pet, and pointed to a pattern his agency sees several times a year. "A few times each summer we get reports of something strange like this, an alligator, a caiman, some sort of exotic snake, reptile, or in this case, a fish," Parker said. "I think a lot of times people have a dream: I want to own an exotic fish, or a snake, or an alligator, and it's cute when it's small. But maybe they can't afford that or house it anymore, and they decide maybe this is someone else's problem."

Parker noted the piranha wouldn't have survived much longer in Pennsylvania waters anyway, poorly suited to both the climate and to fending for itself after a life spent as a pet. Michael confirmed the family disposed of the fish humanely rather than releasing it back into the lake, a decision Parker said was exactly the right call, both for public safety and for the local ecosystem.

I established A Creature Among You Conservation Education in 2021 with one goal in mind: to give the people of Northeast Arkansas meaningful experiences with animals that are so often misunderstood or feared.

I wanted to help change a generational mindset. I wanted people, especially kids, to understand that a snake isn’t evil, a spider isn’t out to get you, and the creatures we’ve been taught to fear all have an important place in the world around us. Most of all, I wanted to replace fear with understanding and instill an appreciation for all the creatures that live among us.

Since then, I’ve had the privilege of standing in front of thousands of people. What started here in Northeast Arkansas has spread almost entirely by word of mouth, taking me across the state and sometimes hours away from home to birthday parties, churches, schools, scout events, community programs, and more. Some of you have even invited me back year after year, and that means more to me than you know.

Across various social media platforms, A Creature Among You has grown to nearly 10,000 followers, and the crazy thing is, I’ve put very little effort into social media itself. To me, that says something important: people are hungry for these experiences. They’re hungry for the knowledge. They want to understand the animals they share this world with. And that is a great thing.

Over the years, I’ve watched fear turn into fascination right in front of me. I’ve watched an 80-year-old woman hold a spider for the first time in her life. I’ve watched people with debilitating fears of snakes become comfortable enough around them that some eventually went on to own a snake themselves. I’ve watched kids go from hiding behind their parents to asking if they can hold an animal one more time before I leave.

Those moments are why I do this.

This experience has been nothing short of amazing, and I want to sincerely thank every single person who has supported A Creature Among You. Thank you to everyone who has invited me into your homes for your children’s birthday parties, welcomed me into your churches, brought me to your scout events and schools, followed and shared my work, or simply told someone else about what I do. You have helped this grow into something far bigger than I imagined when I started in 2021.

And I feel like we’re just getting started.

Moving forward, I’m going to put more effort into spreading this message through social media, reaching new communities, branching out, and continuing to grow A Creature Among You Conservation Education into something that can reach even more people.

The mission hasn’t changed.

Replace fear with fascination.
Replace misunderstanding with knowledge.
And remind people that every creature, even the ones that crawl, slither, bite, sting, or make us uncomfortable, has a place in this world.

Thank you for believing in what I’m doing and for being a part of this journey.

There’s a whole world of incredible creatures living among us.

Let’s learn to understand them.
