Friends of the High Lakes FOTHL is a grass-roots organization comprised of volunteers who help in keeping the High Lakes open for recreation. while using a motorized vehicle.

Friends of The High Lakes is a grass-roots organization comprised of individuals, local businesses, recreational clubs, and user groups who love to recreate in The High Lakes Area in the Lassen National Forest. Friends is comprised of a growing number of outdoor recreationalists, who consider themselves to be environmentalists and conservationists rather than preservationists. We have come togethe

r in an effort to work collaboratively with land management agencies to ensure that recreational opportunities remain available by responsibly maintaining and protecting the environment. We believe that public lands should be FOR the people to use and enjoy. That includes the pursuit of whatever activities people choose, such as fishing, camping, hiking, exploring, picnicking, hunting, rock hounding, geocaching, etc. Friends of the High Lakes is the vehicle to bring together those who responsibly use the land and wish to improve recreational opportunities through support and volunteerism while caring for the environment.

Ok everyone, if you have a crossover SUV with a 4WD button, grab your phone and the little ones, leave all the tools, shovels, blankets and food behind cause it 80 degrees in the valley, don’t tell anyone where you are going, and head on up to the High Lakes following the Google directions. You can fill up when you get back home.

So predictable, and we laugh, but probably we’ve all been there too. I have. She still married me. Pay it forward. See you all soon.

Thank you to everyone who has shown up and done their part to keep the High Lakes clean and open. Your effort keeps this place alive for all of us. We hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend—whether you’re wheeling, hiking, camping, or just enjoying the outdoors.

Pipejam is open and ready to run. It’s still an out-and-back from 519 because of SPI’s R-Line gates. You can push all the way through the cherry-stem corridor to the little triangle of public land at the south end of the hard section, then turn around and run the two miles back.

This is a brutal, relentless trail—comparable to many Hammers trails. Plan for a full day running it with your group. Or, if time’s tight, just run to the top (about halfway) and back.

We lucked out after the Dixie Fire—dozer crews left the trail about 99% perfect.

Get out there and enjoy it.

Public Announcement – High Lakes Trails Day Update

Each year, our nonprofit has proudly hosted a Fall Trails Day in the High Lakes on National Public Lands Day. This year, we’ve decided to take a different approach.

Our focus will be less on fundraising and more on community involvement, with opportunities for additional events as volunteer capacity allows.

We are also moving any Fall events to outside of deer season—likely the second Saturday in September, one week before rifle season—to make it easier for more people to participate.

While we will not be hosting a Fall Trails Day in 2025, our Adopt-A-Trail Coordinator will be reaching out to clubs to encourage them to head up and spend a day keeping their adopted trails and campsites in great shape. Every effort helps keep the High Lakes healthy, safe, and enjoyable for all.

In addition, we’ll be hosting a public meeting (date and details to be announced soon) to share more about the plans Lassen NF has in mind and gather community input.

Stay tuned for announcements on the event schedule ahead. Together, we’ll keep protecting and celebrating the places we all enjoy.

Thank you for your continued support!
