There is something about The Pursuit of Happyness movie that connects so deeply to the heart of what we do at Team OC and I realized that as I watched it through a new lens last night.
So many of the people who walk through our doors are not looking for a handout. They are looking for one new chance. One person to believe in them. One opportunity to start again. One moment that helps them see that their story does not have to end where it is today.
When Team OC grew from simply being a mentoring organization into something bigger, it was because we realized we could no longer move a child forward without also helping move the family forward. A child’s future is deeply connected to the stability, hope, and opportunities surrounding them at home.
This past week, I sat with a mom who simply wants to restart her life. She is willing to work for it. She wants something different for her daughter than what she has known herself. She is not asking for an easy road—she is asking for a chance to build a better one.
I also connected with a gentleman who has very little, yet offered to complete a volunteer project for us at no cost simply because his heart is that big. A reminder that generosity is not measured by what we have, but by what we are willing to give.
These are the stories behind Team OC.
Sometimes the greatest thing we can offer someone is not an answer to every problem. It is a door. A connection. Encouragement. A resource. Someone standing beside them saying, “Keep going. Your next chapter can look different.”
That is why we do what we do.
Because behind every child, every parent, and every person who walks through our doors is a story still being written—and sometimes all it takes is one new chance to change what comes next.
