This residency is open to U.S.-based artists who live in areas with prairie ecosystems, especially Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas. But artists outside those states will also be considered.
The residency program offers 10-night stays at Matfield Station between April and September 2026, with artists expected to present a public program, document their experience via daily social media posts and a written reflection, and later share post-residency work in coordination with staff. Residents must arrange their own transportation and provide their own food, though kitchen essentials are available.
Each artist receives lodging, a $650 stipend from the Kansas Arts Commission for travel and materials (with additional support for those traveling over 700 miles), and close access to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
The program seeks applicants with a compelling body of work, a commitment to place-based inquiry, and an interest in inclusive, contemporary dialogue.
