Heartland Art Guild

Heartland Art Guild The Heartland Art Guild was founded in June of 1992, as the Paola Art League. In November, 19917, we changed our name to the Heartland Art Guild.

The purpose of the Heartland Art Guild is to advance, support, and promote creativity in visual arts and cultural activities of interest to Miami County Kansas and surrounding areas. We are currently meeting on the third Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM in the Paola Free Library next to Paola City Hall. At our meetings we pursue a wide range of art related topics with guest speackers, mini works

hops, demonstrations, slide shows, and presentations by members of their current art projects. We take occasional field trips to major art museums in the Kansas City Area. We frequently have a booth at community events that includes artwork. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in advancing art in Miami County Kansas. Annual dues are $15.00. The Heartland Art Guild promotes art throughout Miami County Kansas in a number of ways:

Displaying member's artwork in area banks and businesses in Paola and Osawatomie, Kansas. Participating in the annual Kansas Day celebration and other events held within the area. Sponsoring the People's Choice Art Awards Show held in September in one of the area banks. Sponsoring a $500.00 Art Scholarship to a talented Miami County high school senior going on to college to pursue a career in art or in and art related field. Holding and annual international miniatures art show at the Miami County Historical Museum. This show is attracting a lot of attention and is growing every year.

What if you had the chance to spend time doing your art in a unique setting while taking in the beauty of the Kansas prairie? Having time to yourself, and also time for interacting with a robust community of arts enthusiasts?

Apply for the 2026 Tallgrass Artist Residency!
Deadline: October 31, 2025.
Application link in comments

This residency is open to U.S.-based artists who live in areas with prairie ecosystems, especially Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas. But artists outside those states will also be considered.

The residency program offers 10-night stays at Matfield Station between April and September 2026, with artists expected to present a public program, document their experience via daily social media posts and a written reflection, and later share post-residency work in coordination with staff. Residents must arrange their own transportation and provide their own food, though kitchen essentials are available.

Each artist receives lodging, a $650 stipend from the Kansas Arts Commission for travel and materials (with additional support for those traveling over 700 miles), and close access to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

The program seeks applicants with a compelling body of work, a commitment to place-based inquiry, and an interest in inclusive, contemporary dialogue.
