We held our 2nd MICO Non-Profit Gathering on Aug. 21 at Wildwood Outdoor Education Center. This Nonprofit Gathering series was sponsored by our friends at First Option Bank.

We had another great turnout with 36 people in attendance from 20 local nonprofits! We had 4 amazing speakers talk about fundraising, marketing and donor retention. Always & Furever Animal Sanctuary was the winner of the drawing for a $500 donation to their charity. Our next event will be in the Spring of 2027 - we hope to see you there!

If you would like more information, please reach out to Tammy Booe at [email protected].

Miami County Community Foundation was asked to present at the Osawatomie Rotary Club weekly meeting yesterday. Thank you to Ivy Cole for organizing. Tammy Booe made the presentation on behalf of the foundation and Dale Samuels shared about the Osawatomie Ministerial Association fund that is housed under the foundation. It was great to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones!!!! The Osawatomie Rotary Club hosts the annual SOS for kids going back to school and just finished up their big fundraiser, a golf tournament at the Osawatomie Golf Course. Thank you for all you do for the Osawatomie community.

Meet the newest Board Member of the Miami County Community Foundation, Chance Doherty!

Chance Doherty is a lifelong resident of Miami County, Kansas, a third-generation family business owner, and a strong advocate for building a better community for future generations.

As President and third-generation owner of Doherty Steel, Chance is proud to continue his family’s legacy of operating and growing a business in the same community he has always called home. He believes successful local businesses have a responsibility that extends beyond their doors—creating opportunities, supporting local families, and investing in the long-term strength of the community.

Outside of work, Chance’s greatest priority is his family. He enjoys spending time with his wife and their three children, traveling and vacationing with family and friends, and making the most of their time together.

A lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, Chance also enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. When time allows, one of his favorite ways to get away is riding UTVs in the sand with family and friends.

Chance is honored to serve on the Miami County Foundation Board and sees the opportunity as another way to give back to the community that has been home to his family and business for generations.

“I believe we all want to see a stronger, better community, and that only happens when we share a common goal and each do our part to make it better every day. Miami County has always been my home. It’s where my family has grown, where we’ve built our business, and where we’re raising the next generation. I’m honored to have the opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to my family and me, and I’m proud to do my part by serving on the Miami County Foundation Board.”

Cool Off with this Diet Peanut Butter Ribbon Pie! 🥜

Looking for a cool, low-sugar treat for your late-summer get-togethers? Betty Sinclair always made this recipe for her diabetic family members, and it quickly became a crowd favorite!

Anna Gross, who submitted this month’s recipe, also has a fund at Miami County Community Foundation.

The Jennifer Gander Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by Anna in memory of her sister Jennifer, awards a yearly $1,000 scholarship specifically to graduating high school seniors who are pursuing alternative pathways to success – think trades, vocational training, and career certification programs outside of a traditional four-year college.

It’s a meaningful way to honor Jennifer’s legacy while lifting up local students as they build bright futures right here in our community.

The recipe:

1️⃣ Crust: melted peanut butter, margarine, & graham cracker crumbs pressed into a 13x9 pan.
2️⃣ Vanilla PB Layer: sugar-free vanilla pudding mixed with milk and peanut butter.
3️⃣ Chocolate Layer: sugar-free chocolate pudding mixed with milk and vanilla.
4️⃣ Topping: lite Cool Whip spread on top!

Read the full recipe in our newsletter linked below.

Chill and enjoy! Snap a picture and tag us if you try it! 📸

What is a Giving Circle?!?!?!

Philanthropy is shifting. People everywhere are embracing their radical generosity and returning to the true meaning of philanthropy — love of humankind. Through collective giving, everyone has a voice and decides together where to give their money, time, and talent, with trust at the root.

This is people-powered philanthropy! These are our friends, neighbors, and colleagues who are coming together around shared values, turning individual gifts into community-led impact.

What is a Giving Circle?
A giving circle is a collective giving model where a group of people with shared values gather to build community and create belonging. Members discuss a common vision, engage in discourse and learning, and make decisions together. It’s a form of participatory philanthropy rooted in community and trust.

Each giving circle looks different. Some meet in person over dinner, while others gather online. Some focus on local nonprofits, others on global issues. What they share is simple: a desire to show care for their community.

Miami County needs YOU!!!!
Get your friends together and form a giving circle. Gather your classmates from high school or college and start a giving circle. Do you like your co-workers? Start a giving circle. You can contribute to your giving circle in a lot of different ways.

Who is going to be my first giving circle with the Miami County Community Foundation? Call me and let's talk over coffee (or a Dr.Pepper)!!!!!
