Many survivors never report sexual assault, and there are countless reasons someone may choose not to come forward. Fear of not being believed, concerns about what happens next, stigma, or simply not feeling ready can all play a role. No survivor should be judged for the choices they make after experiencing trauma.

Whether an assault is reported or not, survivors still deserve compassion, resources, and support. Our advocates are here to listen, respect each survivor’s choices, and help them understand their options when they are ready.

Trauma can affect the way memories are stored and recalled. A survivor may remember certain details clearly while struggling with others, or they may recall events in a different order over time. This does not mean their experience did not happen.

There is no single "right" way for someone to remember or talk about a traumatic experience. Responding with patience, compassion, and an understanding of trauma helps create an environment where survivors feel safe, heard, and supported.

Sexual assault impacts our communities every day, and the number of reported cases is only part of the story. Many survivors never come forward for a variety of deeply personal reasons, which is why raising awareness, reducing stigma, and making support accessible are so important.

Behind every statistic is a person who deserves compassion, respect, and the opportunity to heal. By fostering a community that believes survivors and encourages open conversations, we can help ensure that anyone affected by sexual violence knows they are not alone and that support is available whenever they're ready.

PTSD can show up differently for every survivor. Some people may experience intrusive memories or nightmares, avoid certain people or places, feel constantly on edge, have difficulty sleeping or concentrating, or notice changes in their mood and relationships.

Recognizing these signs can be an important step toward getting support. Trauma responses can be complex, and survivors deserve compassionate care that helps them understand what they are experiencing and find a path forward that works for them.

Sexual assault is not always committed by someone unknown to the survivor. In many cases, the person who causes harm is someone the survivor knows, trusts, or has an existing relationship with, which can make processing the experience and seeking support even more complicated.

Challenging this misconception helps us better understand the realities of sexual violence and respond to survivors with compassion instead of assumptions. No matter who caused the harm, survivors deserve to be believed, respected, and supported.

Our SAP team members Shannon, Pam, and Marcia had the opportunity to spend time connecting with the community at an event hosted by Florida Springs Wellness and Recovery Center on August 31.

Events like this give our team a chance to share resources, build relationships, and make sure more people know about the support available in our community. A big thank you to Florida Springs for the invitation and for welcoming our team! 💙

People experiencing homelessness can face increased vulnerability to exploitation, trafficking, and sexual violence. Limited access to safe housing, transportation, financial resources, and trusted support can create situations where individuals are more easily targeted or may feel they have fewer options for getting help.

Raising awareness of these risks is especially important in communities like Pensacola, where many individuals are experiencing homelessness. Every survivor deserves to be treated with dignity, believed, and connected with compassionate support, regardless of their housing situation.

Male survivors are often left out of conversations about sexual violence, but their experiences are real and deserve to be acknowledged. Raising awareness helps challenge misconceptions, reduce stigma, and remind survivors that they are not alone.

Every survivor deserves to be believed, supported, and treated with compassion. By creating a community where all survivors feel safe to seek help, we can ensure that no one has to face healing on their own.

Congratulations, Marcia! 💙
