🌊 A storm doesn’t have to be nearby to create dangerous rip currents.

Many people are surprised to learn that hurricanes and tropical storms hundreds—or even thousands—of miles away can increase rip current activity along our beaches.

Strong storms generate powerful ocean swells that travel long distances across the water. When those waves reach shore, they can create stronger and more frequent rip currents, even when the weather at the beach is sunny and calm.

⚠️ Don’t let blue skies fool you.
A beautiful beach day can still have dangerous water conditions.

Before heading into the ocean:
✅ Check the local beach forecast and flag warnings
✅ Know how to spot a rip current
✅ Bring something that floats
✅ If caught in a rip current: Don’t panic. Float. Conserve your energy.

Remember: The storm may be far away, but its impact can reach your beach.

🏖️🌊 Think rip currents only happen in the ocean? Think again.

Rip currents can form anywhere waves break along a shoreline—including Lakes. Every year, people lose their lives after being caught in powerful currents on lakes, often because they never expected them to be there. The Great Lakes average about 11–12 rip current-related drownings each year.

Large lakes can produce waves, currents, and dangerous water conditions that look surprisingly similar to those found at ocean beaches. Lake Michigan alone has experienced hundreds of rip current incidents over the past two decades.

Whether you’re visiting the Gulf Coast, the Great Lakes, Lake Ponchatrain or your favorite local lake beach, remember:

✅ Know the water conditions before you enter.
✅ Bring a flotation device.
✅ If caught in a rip current, don’t panic—FLOAT.
✅ Signal for help and conserve your energy.

Rip currents don’t care if the water is saltwater or freshwater.

If you can float, you can survive. 💙

A pool noodle or other flotation device can help you stay afloat if you get caught in a rip current.

If a rip current pulls you away from shore, don’t fight it. Float, stay calm, and conserve your energy.

🚩 One red flag can change your life.

Red flag days mean dangerous life-threatening rip currents are present. What looks calm from the shore can quickly turn deadly in the water.

The safest decision on a red flag day is simple:
☀️ Stay on the sand
