Across Central Asia, Christians are conscious of actions that could draw government scrutiny. Scrutiny leads to questions. Questions can result in regulatory pressure on the church. Central Asians know this kind of oppression through regulation all too well.1

Pastors have explained that a book in hand draws government suspicion, and travelers are searched. So the joy of Bibles recently printed in local languages is mixed with fear.

In order to avoid unwanted investigation of their churches, pastors often limit themselves to studying the Scriptures through the scrolling light of their phones. Swiping through pages of the Bible creates significant barriers to study, especially when pastors are trying to understand the overarching message of a book or passage.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬
Educational challenges further complicate the task for these pastors. A number of the men we have trained had little education when they came to faith. They entered their first WordPartners workshop without previous training. As Pastor Mehmet* explained, “I wanted to preach [narratives] accurately. I didn’t have any formal training. My parents didn’t have money to send me to school . . . When I received Jesus at twelve, that’s when I learned to read and write. I always wanted to preach. But I had a hard time; I had less words.”

Anxiety over when and where to open a printed Bible, coupled with a lack of training, creates a state of spiritual hunger for pastors and their churches. Another pastor, Ivan*, described the practical result: “We used to preach with a lot of empty words.” Despite loving God’s Word deeply, Mehmet and Ivan struggled to know how to preach it. That was before they attended their first workshops...

Let’s pray that the Lord would give his church in Asia a great delight in the unsearchable riches of Christ as they make known the manifold wisdom of God to their neighbors and to the nations:

>A Creative Access Country (CAC) has been cracking down on house churches. A number of their leaders have been arrested. Pray for their release, for their steadfast faith; and pray for the families during this time of separation.

>Pray for the open doors into Northern Thailand as more people from CAC are relocating there; for a new October 24-27 workshop of pastors and leaders.

>Rejoice in the four ongoing Core Training groups in Northern Thailand.

>Pray for our new Nepal CORE Training launched in early October.

>Rejoice in ongoing virtual Advanced Training in India in 2026, as the training multiplies through our trainers; pray for in-person training in 2027.

In just fourteen square miles of Villa El Salvador, nearly half a million people live, work, and raise their families. The spiritual need in a community this dense is immense.

Pastors and leaders from across Lima are gathering there with a shared desire to handle God’s Word faithfully with greater clarity and confidence. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭’𝐬 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐛𝐲 𝐆𝐨𝐝’𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

In a community this large, the impact of even a few well-trained pastors can extend far beyond a single congregation. As these leaders study together, they are not only growing in confidence and clarity, they are also preparing to invest in others. The hope is that from this very group, new trainers will emerge who can carry the same faithful approach to handling the Word into other neighborhoods of Lima and, in time, across Peru.
