About Us

The Drafty Barn grew out of a lifetime of helping friends help animals when no one else could or would. At the beginning, we concentrated on hospice care for cats and the “littles” who were absolutely unadoptable and almost certain to be destroyed. As time has passed and we’ve grown, our vision and expertise has expanded to include a fundamental shift in the nature of “shelters” and a transition to shelters which actually shelter instead of bagging and tagging dogs that administrators simply don’t like. We’ve added a resident expert in Behavior and Training, another expert in Communications & Technology, given a free hand to our Director of Special Projects, a focus on educating and including children in rescue (our youngest veteran of “kitten season” is 4), and a mission to bring an end to irresponsible breeding and convert “shelters” as we know them today into true sanctuaries where animals are never destroyed simply because they’re homeless, ill, or unattractive.

And - of course - we all have our resident menageries!

We are a “not-for-profit” organization, licensed in the City of Palo Alto, but we are not yet a 501(c)(3), so donations are not yet tax-exempt.

100% of donations go straight to pay off old vet bills (or new vet bills), buy supplies, transport animals, keep the car running, lobby for changes in local state, and federal laws, and donate to other worthy animal-related causes. When funds run low, we ask for donations and work part-time to help support our efforts. We have no paid staff.
