June 15 marks the 10 year anniversary of DACA - the executive order of Pres. Obama enabling undocumented immigrants who came as children to the US to work & travel, etc. in the US. Congress has still not been able to pass a law offering a pathway to citizenship for these immigrants who have done so much with their lives. Below are a number of links to video stories we recorded of DREAMers a few years back. Many are now contributing as teachers and professionals in other arenas. Meanwhile the DACA order has been challenged by a number of states and is being "tried" in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. The federal government is currently not granting applications from first-time applicants and anyone whose DACA status expired more than one year ago.

You'll be inspired by the immigration story of a Colombian teen-ager who fended for himself (without even graduating high school), and ends up becoming an international ballet soloist and eventually an I-T specialist in the Silicon Valley. Eileen Zubiria contributed the gripping narrative.

The Made Into America archive of immigration stories also includes the migration stories of African-Americans who were pressed into slavery and severed from their countries of origins. Although they weren't willing immigrants, they built this country and are an integral part of America's heritage. Here's a recent family narrative researched by a high school student.

October is Filipino American History Month. I had the privilege of interviewing 4 Filipina caretakers recently for the City of San Jose Office of Racial Equity and the Art Museum. Their stories were quite sad as they all had children (they are supporting) back in the Philippines. You can see the story exchange here.

A new narrative recently posted in our archive of immigration stories is about a Vietnamese woman who came with her family. Her son thinks it was because she was getting older and she worried about how long she could continue to work in the fields. She says it was for better opportunities for her children and indeed they are progressing in the US. She's also proud of her 2 AA degrees she earned here.
