Fools Mission

Fools Mission Fools Mission is a consciousness-raising ministry of multiculturalism and supportive companionship.

Since 2012, Fools Mission has embraced the Way of the Fool—the archetypal trickster figure who disrupts rigid or decaying cultures through art, humor, and radical compassion. Governed by an egalitarian circle of covenanted fools, Fools Mission deliberately builds community among people who have access to wealth and privilege and those who do not. Through witness, accompaniment, education, and advo

cacy, Fools Mission cultivates empathy and friendship across socially-constructed boundaries of identity, such as class, race, language, immigration status, culture, gender, sexual preference, or educational achievement. Fools Mission creates expressive arts programs that expand emotional range, give expression to untold stories, and offer an antidote to depression, apathy, cynicism, and despair. Fools practice a life of service wherever they encounter bureaucracy—such as applications for public benefits, medical appointments, or court hearings. As fools are often overheard to say: “It’s a good day to be a fool.”

Each July 4th, Redwood City hosts "Chalk Full of Fun" downtown. This year Fools Mission was there to create this chalk art and share it with the community. It was a fun way to spend time with friends and get the word out about Fools Mission.

Fools Mission is proud to have co-sponsored the Redwood City Lights for Liberty vigil this past Friday evening. My highly unscientific crowd count estimates that we had between 300 and 400 attendees, and a nonstop stream of supporting honks from passing cars (even a fire truck!) Charles Moehle of Pro Bono Photo documented this event:

Thank you to everyone who turned out to show solidarity with our wonderful, diverse community.

Last week, Fools Mission and the world lost a treasured friend with the passing of Eitan Fenson. We extend our deepest sympathy to Eitan's family as we grieve with them. Fellow Fool David V wrote the following message:

"I knew Eitan Fenson as a founder of Fools Mission. He used to say that his reason for participation was because it was a way he could meet, interact with and learn from people who were different from him. He said that in his daily life he would not come into contact with many of them. I’m sure that this was true. But I also think that he used it to be modest and mask a deep passion for helping people who were not as fortunate as he was.

The world is poorer for his passing. The world lost a strong voice for freedom and fair play. We all lost in the process. However those of us who were lucky enough to know him also know that we have a job to do. We can’t fill the void. But we can honor him by working for justice."

My latest blog for Fools Mission is an essay-length offering for my fellow activists. I’ve been ruminating on it for a year, and with a little help from my friends, it erupted onto the page this week. Quoting one of the opening paragraphs:

“My purpose in writing this is to show that that the liberal activism we’re familiar with today doesn’t understand rhizomatic insights; that is to say, policy and legislative demands uninformed by direct human relationships with the “underprivileged” don’t reflect the deeply entangled reality of our situation. Without a fool’s sense of the primacy of relationship, our attempts to “fix” social problems through coercion and control will be met with continuing cycles of frustration, burnout, and failure.”
