Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange

Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange We refurbish bikes for those in need and teach bicycle repair skills to volunteers in Silicon Valley. We also sell amazing used bikes!

Visit our website at bikex.org to see our calendar of open days. Since 1993, the Bicycle Exchange has been fixing used bicycles donated by the public with the help of volunteers - both novice and veteran mechanics. The refurbished bikes are then donated to families in need through our social service organization partners. We fix and give away bikes:
To promote daily bicycle use as a sustainable tr

ansportation choice--school, work, errands, exercise & fitness. To give children the joy of bicycling despite their family’s economic challenges. To stop the rise in childhood obesity and its devastating health effects on children. To reuse, recycle, and conserve resources--both in materials and energy. To teach and share bike repair skills through social workdays. To provide bicycles to adults who need them to get to work and school. Bicycles and parts are donated to our workshop by people who no longer need them. Our typical Bicycle Exchange Workdays are on the second and fourth Saturdays. You can RSVP for a slot at bikex.eventbrite.org. We also desperately need experienced mechanics to help refurbish bikes at home. Please reach out if you're interested in that.

We were delighted to welcome a new partner this week, the Ravenswood Family Health Network in East Palo Alto. MonteG, a Wellness Coordinator, contacted us to request a couple of bikes to be used as raffle prizes for their upcoming health fair. If two bikes are good, four bikes are twice as nice! We look forward to working more with these fine folks in the future.

Another great ABC class on the books! 🚲 Huge shoutout to our co-hosts at the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and everyone who joined us at the shop on Saturday to learn the basics of Air, Brakes & Chains. The Bay Area is a little more ride-ready! 🔧

SVBE was heartened to hand off a set of bikes (plus bicycle locks, helmets, and lights) to multiple therapists representing several Veterans Affairs sites around the Bay Area.  We’ve partnered with the V.A. for many years to provide bicycles for veterans, but this was our first delivery since last fall.  We’re always proud to be able to support our veterans. Thank you for your service!

A huge thank you to longtime volunteer Grant for an excellent wheel building workshop! Participants were some of our frequent volunteers. Some folks practiced transferring hubs and spokes from old wheels to new rims, while others built a wheel from the ground up starting with the lacing process. It was a great opportunity to learn new skills and keep more bikes rolling.

🚲 May was a great month at BikeX — and June is shaping up even better! Our latest newsletter recaps everything from last month and what's coming up, including weekly repair events, Thaco Thursdays out on the Baylands with bay views and tacos, and volunteer openings if you're looking to get involved.

Voting for Palo Alto Weekly's Best of 2026 is open now through June 7 — write us in if we don't appear in the dropdown! 🗳️

And bike lovers — a 1975–85 Pep Magni road bike built on a Giovanni Losa frame with a full Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset just landed in the shop. You know it won't last long.

This homemade plastic bottle fender impressed us so much we decided to leave it on the outgoing donation bike.

Due to a last-minute schedule change, we had a couple dozen bikes which had completed repairs/inspection but no agency to receive them. Big thanks to our partner, Catholic Worker House (CWH) in Redwood City, who was able to come to the shop on very short notice. They were rewarded with a bounty of 26 bikes (plus locks are helmets) to fill their truck. LarryP from CWH was delighted with the windfall, stating “bikes are like gold” in the community.

If you see this fellow riding around town, make sure to welcome him to California. Originally from Iceland and without a car yet, he jogged to our shop from home to purchase a bike to use for commuting to his new job.

Thank you for your bike purchase! We wish you many safe and happy miles, and welcome you to the Bay Area!
