North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused - NISA The North American Islamic Shelter for Abused (NISA), was established in 2002 as a vehicle towards alleviating issues related to abuse and domestic violence.

The statistics show that domestic violence is on rise among the Muslim communities in North America. There is a dire need for the establishment of social welfare organizations, who can help and understand the plight of Muslims trapped in DV situations. NISA was created, in October 2002, to play a positive role in elimination of this social condition within Muslim families.

Please join the NISA team at our 11th Annual Fundraising Gala honoring more than a decade’s worth of service to victims of domestic violence. Our theme this year “Raising Generations Against Domestic Violence” will discuss ways to raise the next generation with faith to understand that domestic violence is never an option.

Our keynote speaker this year, Hina Khan-Mukhtar (https://hinakm.com/about/) will share parenting advice for nurturing Muslim values in children and creating harmony in the home so as to lessen some of the perils that lead to domestic violence.

Assalamu ’Alaykum and Greetings of Peace,
The Board of Directors at NISA welcomes Asma Ahmad as their new Executive Director.
Asma Ahmad, NISA Executive DirectorAsma has served on the NISA Board for the past four years and her transition into the Executive Director role comes at a time when NISA plans to expand its services to the community it has served the past twenty years. She is a seasoned advocate in the non-profit world having volunteered at several 501(c)3 organizations and brings a wealth of experience, hard work and dedication to NISA.
Asma has worked in Corporate law the past decade having earned her JD Law degree from Golden Gate University where she also earned a Master’s degree in Political Science. She attended California State University, East Bay for her undergraduate degree in Business Administration.
Asma is British and grew up in London. She’s a recipient of Queen Elizabeth’s Distinguished Award for Academic Excellence, was elected Head Girl at highschool and has served as Advisor to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme in the U.K. She is fluent in French & Urdu and lives in the Bay Area with her husband and children.

In honor of International Women’s Day, NISA was proud to participate in the Narika Community Resource Fair, co-sponsored by Washington Hospital and Kaiser Permanente.

This free community event brought together organizations across sectors, creating valuable opportunities to collaborate, share resources, and support our communities.

We were also honored by the presence of Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan, making the occasion even more special.

Grateful for this opportunity and looking forward to many more ways to serve.
