North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused - NISA

North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused - NISA The North American Islamic Shelter for Abused (NISA), was established in 2002 as a vehicle towards alleviating issues related to abuse and domestic violence.

The statistics show that domestic violence is on rise among the Muslim communities in North America. There is a dire need for the establishment of social welfare organizations, who can help and understand the plight of Muslims trapped in DV situations. NISA was created, in October 2002, to play a positive role in elimination of this social condition within Muslim families.

In honor of International Women’s Day, NISA was proud to participate in the Narika Community Resource Fair, co-sponsored by Washington Hospital and Kaiser Permanente.

This free community event brought together organizations across sectors, creating valuable opportunities to collaborate, share resources, and support our communities.

We were also honored by the presence of Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan, making the occasion even more special.

Grateful for this opportunity and looking forward to many more ways to serve.

We were honored to have partnered with World Relief to support Afghan women in their journey of learning, safety, and empowerment.

Over the past week, our team delivered three Domestic Violence education sessions over Zoom to Afghan Women’s Integration Groups, reaching nearly 90 women. Two sessions were led by our Dari speaking advocate Nergies Malikzadah, ensuring culturally and linguistically accessible support, while the third session was facilitated by our English-speaking advocate Umme Habeeba with interpretation provided by World Relief staff.

Together, we covered:
✔️ What domestic violence is and its impact on families and communities
✔️ Legal rights and protections in the U.S.
✔️ How and where to seek help
✔️ Understanding Child Protective Services

Although these conversations are not always easy, they are essential. We are grateful for the trust of these women and proud to stand alongside them with knowledge, resources, and support.

Thank you to World Relief for your partnership and commitment to uplifting refugee communities.

Assalamu 'Alaykum and Greetings of Peace,

Ramadan Mubarak. May Allah fill this month with blessings for you and your loved ones.

We begin with deep gratitude. Your generosity allows us to serve the most vulnerable members of our community—individuals and families seeking safety, dignity, and healing from domestic violence.

Your support carries a survivor from a moment of crisis toward hope:

✦ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹: For many, the journey begins with a whispered phone call in the middle of the night. Because of you, that call is answered with compassion, confidentiality, and immediate care.

✦ 𝗔 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻: When refuge is needed, you provide more than a roof. You provide a secure shelter, clean housing, and essential supplies so that families can finally exhale.

✦ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: Upon arrival, clients receive clothing, food, and hygiene items—often the first possessions they have controlled in a long time. For children, your support provides the normalcy of toys, school supplies, and diapers.

✦ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Beyond shelter, you fund legal advocacy (including restraining orders and custody matters), trauma-informed therapy, and safety planning tailored to each survivor's needs.

✦ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: As stability returns, we empower survivors through ESL classes, employment readiness, and financial literacy—respecting their autonomy every step of the way.

Our work is rooted in the Islamic values of mercy (rahmah) and justice ('adl). We strive to ensure survivors are treated not as "cases," but as honored individuals deserving of respect.

None of this is possible without you. Your donations are the phone line that is answered, the door that opens, and the guidance that helps a family begin again.

Thank you for being part of every step toward healing.

May your Ramadan close with immense barakah, happiness, and safety. Aameen.

JazakAllah Khayr,
The Board, Staff, Volunteers, and Clients at NISA
