Neighbors Abroad is in the news! 🌏🇵🇭

Thank you to the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco for joining us at two recent community celebrations and featuring them on your website!

🌳 At the new Sister City Grove, we joined the City of Palo Alto, Canopy, and community members to plant trees honoring Palo Alto’s international friendships, including our oldest sister-city relationship with Palo, Leyte, established in 1963.

🎉 At Calenda—Celebrating Across Three Continents, we celebrated the cultures of Palo, Leyte; Oaxaca, Mexico; and Narok, Kenya, through music, dance, art, and activities for all ages.

We’re grateful to the Consulate, our partners, volunteers, and everyone who came out to celebrate these friendships with us!

Thank you to the incredible performers who brought yesterday’s Calenda on Cal Ave to life! Their music, dance, artistry, and generous spirit made the celebration a joyful expression of the cultures and connections that unite our community.

Our performers included Mariachi Cardenal de Stanford, Mabuhay Folkloric Society, members of the Maasai Diaspora who led interactive dancing, Ballet Folklorico Mexico Vivo, and the choir from Peninsula Cantare.

🌳 Friendship took root in Palo Alto!

Yesterday, we celebrated the planting of Palo Alto’s new Sister City Grove, joined by friends from near and far—including representatives from Oaxaca and Narok, local elected officials, partner organizations, community members, and longtime friends of Neighbors Abroad.

Each tree is a living symbol of the friendships Palo Alto has cultivated around the world—and the many more connections still to grow. 🌎🌱

Our gratitude to the City of Palo Alto and Canopy for your partnership! A very special thank you to Sarah Burgess, Neighbors Abroad Co-VP for Oaxaca and President Emerita, and Jennifer Kleckner, Neighbors Abroad Co-VP for Albi, whose vision and hard work helped bring the Sister City Grove to life. 💚

This ribbon cutting represents much more than the opening of a new cistern—it represents greater security and opportunity for children and families in Oaxaca. 💧

Calpulli Center is located high in the scenic San Jacinto mountains, where families have limited resources and government-supplied water arrives only about once every 40 days. With the generosity of a Neighbors Abroad donor, the center now has a new 10,000-liter above-ground cistern, improved roofing, and a rainwater-capture system.

This new infrastructure will provide Calpulli with a more reliable water supply while allowing the center to support its surrounding neighborhood when possible. Calpulli serves local children through nutritious breakfasts, homework assistance, library and computer-learning programs, and advocacy for children’s rights. It also helps preserve Indigenous traditions through music and dance.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this possible—and delighted to celebrate this special moment with our friends in Oaxaca!
