There are several less visible sea level rise threats. A concern with groundwater rise, is how close groundwater already is to the surface around the Bay. When considering how close groundwater is to the surface with the number of contaminated sites around the Bay the risk is clear; as groundwater rises, contaminated sites may become a greater threat to public and environmental health. That is why Bay Alive advocates for identifying and removing toxins before rising groundwater makes those risks harder to contain.

Join a Bay Alive Local Team to Shape Solutions in Your City

Sea level rise planning is starting in several Loma Prieta Chapter communities, and the Bay needs your help ensuring its natural ecosystems and community members are uplifted and protected. The Bay Alive Campaign is launching local advocacy teams to monitor and improve local sea level rise plans, and we will need all hands on deck! Strong community oversight and advocacy is essential to ensure natural and nature-based solutions, equity, and climate resilience are fully realized.

🌊 Come learn about sea level rise adaptation strategies (past and present), related advocacy efforts, and the Sierra Club’s Bay Alive campaign this Sunday, June 14th at 9:30am.

⚓️ We’ll plan to meet in front of the Bay View Boat Club and make occasional stops along the way, starting at Bay Front Park and ending at Heron’s Head Park (~3 miles), a 23-acre wetland highly vulnerable to sea level rise. Please bring comfortable shoes, water, a hat, and sunscreen. Snacks will be provided.

There are several less visible sea level rise threats. One of the most serious hazards of groundwater rise is that it can mobilize contaminants already present in the soil. There are many existing contaminated sites around the Bay, they are considered either “open” or “closed.” Closed sites are those where cleanup has been deemed complete.
☣️
However, this distinction does not necessarily mean they no longer pose a risk. Many of these sites were closed decades ago, before regulators were paying attention to some hazardous materials that are now recognized as contaminants of concern. Furthermore, many cleanup standards were established before the threat of sea level rise was recognized so they didn’t consider the possibility of submergence and contaminants being carried far from the source by groundwater rise.
