One mother of a teenage boy with a severe and complex autistic spectrum disorder and who has been physically assaulted, pinned to the floor, concussed and cut, says there is not enough support for families experiencing violence from their own children.

A Northumberland mother says support is needed for parents abused by children with additional needs.

What predicts childhood conduct problems? Perhaps not what you think. Parent socioeconomic status and being bullied are relatively weak predictors compared to genetic factors and (not) having completed behavioral interventions.

Failures of self-control can manifest as externalizing behaviors (e.g., aggression, rule-breaking) that have far-reaching negative consequences. Researchers hav...

A silent but pervasive form of domestic violence is child-to-parent violence. Families of children with disorders of aggression suffer most of all--including the 170+ mothers ultimately killed by their sons in the UK in the last 15 years.

Research shows that mothers are seen as a ‘safe space’ for their offspring – nearly all of them sons – to use violence

A new study links a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to lifespan reductions of up to 10 years. Most people with disorders of aggression also qualify for a disorder of ADHD. This study reinforces the importance of treatment to help promote better and longer lives.

Disorders of aggression are not untreatable. We just have to get serious about trying to treat them.

New research in Lancet Psychiatry finds mentalization-based therapy significantly reduces aggression in people with ASPD.

MBT-ASPD holds promise as an effective intervention for individuals with antisocial personality disorder within a forensic population. Future research should explore these findings’ generalisability and the sustainability of treatment gains.

Thank you to Harvard Law Review for shining a light how desperately people with disorders of aggression like Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and psychopathy need treatment, and how grotesquely unlikely they are to ever receive it.

However, the problem is not the diagnosis itself. ASPD and psychopathy are clearly clinical disorders. The problem is that people who receive these diagnoses (as well as diagnoses of Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Conduct Disorder or Oppositional Defiant Disorder) are uniquely unlikely to ever receive treatment.

Treatments for disorders of aggression exist. But too few people ever receive them. Fewer than HALF of children with disorders of aggression receive any treatment. Thus the myth these disorders are "untreatable" persists--as does preventable violence.

63% of violence is committed by 1% of the population. Most of these people have one or more disorders of aggression. And most will never be diagnosed or treated.

SPDA is working to change this.
