🏅 Congratulations to our own Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, on receiving the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine!

Dr. Deisseroth, a member of the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, shares this year’s Nobel Prize with Peter Hegemann, PhD, and Georg Nagel, PhD, for discoveries that led to the development of optogenetics, the transformative technology that enables scientists to control the activity of specific nerve cells using light.

Optogenetics revolutionized neuroscience, giving researchers an unprecedented ability to establish how specific cells and brain circuits causally contribute to behavior and opening new avenues for understanding the circuitry underlying psychiatric and neurological conditions.

For our Center, this recognition is especially meaningful. Karl’s work helped establish brain circuits as a fundamental level for understanding behavior and neuropsychiatric illness. We have had the privilege of building on that foundation together through our NIDA P50 Center of Excellence, where we collaborate on human studies examining how ketamine, M**A and psilocybin engage brain circuits, work that complements our broader efforts to translate circuit science into more precise approaches to mental health treatment.

We are extraordinarily proud to have Karl as a member of our Center and thrilled to celebrate this remarkable and richly deserved recognition.

Congratulations, Karl!

What happens when a brain scan becomes part of the clinical conversation?

At last year’s Stanford Precision Mental Health Symposium, Dr. Eric van Staalduinen gave the talk “From Scan to Solution: The Role of Neuroimaging in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning,” exploring how neuroimaging can contribute to understanding mental health and informing individualized approaches to care.

This research-to-clinic connection is reflected in the Stanford Precision Psychiatry Clinic, a consultation service affiliated with the Center for Precision Mental Health. The clinic integrates functional brain imaging into the psychiatric evaluation to inform individualized treatment planning for patients with depression and anxiety.

The goal of precision mental health is not simply to understand the brain in greater detail. It is to explore how that knowledge can be translated into more individualized care.

How can precision mental health research help us better understand—and better treat—depression?

At our 2024 Precision Mental Health Symposium, Rachel Hilton, PhD-c, RN, PMHNP-BC, gave a talk on “Targeting Cognition in Depression,” highlighting the importance of understanding cognitive symptoms and individual differences in depression as we work toward more precise approaches to treatment.

🧠 DAY 2 | Meet the People Behind the Science

Computational methods and brain-based data are transforming psychiatry. Two people with the same diagnosis can differ fundamentally in neurobiology and treatment response. Normative models and AI foundation models can capture this individual variation, moving the field from one-size-fits-all toward precision care that guides the right treatment to the right person.

Today, we’re highlighting Dr. Teddy Akiki and his work featured in Nature Computational Science: Transforming psychiatry with computational and brain-based methods.

🧠 Kicking off Precision Mental Health Week | Transforming Mental Health Through Brain Circuit Science

The future of mental health starts with discovery.

By studying how brain circuits shape thoughts, emotions, and behavior, researchers are uncovering new ways to understand mental health—and new possibilities for more precise approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

🎧 Start your week with discovery: Listen to Dr. Leanne Williams’ interview on From Your Neurons to Ours podcast with the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute, where she explores how brain imaging is transforming mental health and where the field is headed next.
