Post 375 was proud to have once again helped put together a fantastic joint 🇺🇸 celebration with our friends from Stanford University and the City of Palo Alto - Public Agency!

Thanks also to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for delivering a stirring keynote address and the Blue Star Moms of South Bay for honoring our very own Manny Velasco with a Quilt of Valor for his years of service to our nation as a U.S. Marine, and to our community as an officer in Post 375!

American Legion Post 375 spearheaded restoration project, which was unveiled on .

Dozens of Palo Alto residents, military veterans and their families gathered on Monday afternoon in a historic building that was once part of an army camp to showcase two symbols of gratitude to those who have served.

One loomed proudly over the Veterans Day ceremony: a flagpole in front of MacArthur Park Restaurant with recently restored copper plaques at the base and a stone plinth commemorating all the men and women who had served in the armed forces. The plaques were vandalized in 2021, removed by Stanford University and replaced with a green enclosure.

The other was a quilt that the South Bay Blue Star Moms presented to Palo Alto resident Ernestine Faxon, a U.S. Navy veteran who left her hometown during college years to sign up for the military and who served as chief petty officer at Oakland Naval Supply Center before getting discharged in 1946. To cheers and applause from the crowd, Faxon accepted the Quilt of Valor from Donna Zolezzi, president of Blue Star Moms.

Long-time Congress member Anna Eshoo spoke at a Veterans Day event in Palo Alto on Monday afternoon. She talked about honoring the men and women who’ve served our country and her final days serving Silicon Valley.

After serving in Congress for over three decades, Eshoo says she’s learned a lot about the sacrifices of the military and their families, and on Monday, it was her honor to recognize them.

"This is the Veteran’s Memorial Building and being here in this building is cool to us because we’ve been here all this time," said Dr. Will Von Kaenel, an Air Force Veteran.

American Legion Post 375 hosted a brief ceremony at MacArthur Park in partnership with Stanford and the city of Palo Alto. Before MacArthur Park became a restaurant in 1981, it was used as a veteran’s hall and a hostess house for military families during World War I.

"It was three years ago that we first had an event here and we really, it’s been great because it brings Palo Alto, Stanford and us together," said Von Kaenel.

Eshoo is retiring after 32 years of representing Silicon Valley. Former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo will replace her.

We encourage the local community to attend this special event--especially our local Veterans.

Stanford University Department of Music soloist Nova Jiménez
A reception follows in the MacArthur Park Restaurant. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres, cake, and company with other attendees.

Parking is available in the adjacent parking lots to the Mac Arthur Park.

🥳Finally! This has been a long journey, but we are thrilled to have been a part of achieving the restoration of the Memorial Flagpole.

We look forward to cutting the ribbon on the restored monument together with the City of Palo Alto - Public Agency, Stanford University and everyone who supports our local on , November 11th at 3:00 pm at MacArthur Park Restaurant. Make plans to join us!
