Lake Monticello Community Foundation Our mission is to enhance the well-being of residents of Lake Monticello and Fluvanna County. But a gift to the LMOA is not tax-deductible.

We are happy to announce the establishment of the Lake Monticello Community Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization (501c3) whose sole purpose is to support the Lake Monticello Community. Our mission is to enhance the well-being of all Lake residents by providing leadership and resources through volunteerism and philanthropy to address current and future needs that impact the common good.

While the Foundation is not officially affiliated with LMOA, our intention is to collaborate with LMOA to support the Lake Monticello Community, working with the residents, administration and board to identify needs and raising the revenues required. Because we are a 501 (c) 3 organization, all contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible. The idea for establishing a non-profit at Lake Monticello arose from a town hall meeting about raising dues when a Lake resident rose to say that he donates to many organizations each year and would be happy to donate to the Lake if he knew there was a need. So, we set out to provide a way for people to contribute financially to the community and receive a tax deduction. With the help of Lake resident Carrol Kinsey, an attorney with extensive non-profit experience, we established the Foundation in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Foundation has been certified as a non-profit corporation by the State Corporation Commission. The Foundation has received its letter of tax exempt determination from the IRS in which the IRS found that it was a IRC 501(c)(3) charitable organization and that donors can deduct contributions they make to the Foundation. A board of directors has been assembled and officers elected. We have established a bank account and have accumulated a small sum so far. We want to emphasize that we will fully cooperate with the LMOA Board of Directors and Administration to provide tangible benefits to our community. Those benefits could take the form of small and large projects to enhance our physical environment but fall outside the Lake’s budget limitations, events that bring the community together, or grants to organizations that support our residents. Currently we are planning fund-raising strategies and events and will adhere to all LMOA policies and procedures. We will seek approval when required and communicate plans to the LMOA Administration. The Lake Monticello Community Foundation is here to help improve our community without having to raise dues for projects, while providing a tax deduction to those who contribute. Lake Artist Uses His Talent to Benefit Foundation, Others

Laker Martín Castillo is the Lake Monticello Community Foundation’s “Volunteer of the Month” for his artistic endeavors for the Foundation. Martín designed the logo for the Foundation’s new Fluvanna Action Fund, as well as the logo and shirt design for the Foundation’s pickleball fundraiser last fall.

Martín said both projects were labors of love, both because he loves doing art and because he’s passionate about helping his community.

Professionally, Martín has been doing art for more than 30 years, currently as a creative director for IQ Solutions, which works for various government health-related agencies such as the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services.

“I’ve always loved art, ever since an eighth grade teacher inspired me,” Martín said. He got several art scholarships, including a year in Germany, and graduated from VCU with a degree in Communication Arts, “and has been doing art ever since,” he said.

Martín still dabbles on his own time with acrylics and alkyds (like oil painting but with synthetic oils that dry faster). Now, most of his professional work is computer-based, he said: “Basically, I get to play on the computer all day.”

“I enjoy it and there’s absolutely no reason not to share my ability with good causes,” Martín said. “We (he and wife Malini) try to volunteer as much as possible, and we’re hoping to have more time to do that.”

For fun, Martín draws and paints (of course), plays pickleball, loves to cook, visits wineries and does “a little bit of everything,” he said.

Foundation Launches Fluvanna Action Fund to Boost Community Groups

In an effort to boost Fluvanna-wide community service organizations, the Lake Monticello Community Foundation is launching the Fluvanna Action Fund. The goal of the fund is to help assure that non-profits and community service groups that serve the entire county have the resources they need to continue their good work for this wonderful community.

The Lake Monticello Community Foundation has, since its very beginning, been an active contributor to organizations that benefit all of Fluvanna. In its first six years, the Lake Monticello Community Foundation raised and donated about $50,000 to countywide nonprofits and community service organizations.

The Foundation’s major recipients have included Fluvanna Meals on Wheels, the Fluvanna SPCA, the Lake Monticello Fire & Rescue Service, the MACAA food bank, Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity, scholarships for county high school students, the Fluvanna Dolly Parton Imagination Library, FLRD food pantry, Fluvanna High School Boosters, Happy Faces, All Blessings Flow, Fluvanna Arts Studio Tour, Lake Monticello Piecemakers and Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation.

The Lake Monticello Community Foundation is expanding that effort by creating the Fluvanna Action Fund to collect money dedicated to supporting countywide organizations. In addition to direct contributions to the Fund from the Foundation itself, community residents and corporate donors would be able to designate particular contributions for the countywide Fund. Money in the Fund would be distributed to organizations that submit grant applications, or that the Foundation feels would benefit most.
The Lake Monticello Community Foundation is kicking off the fundraising for the Fluvanna Action Fund with an initial $5,000 donation, and expects to continue contributing to the Fund at a rate similar to its countywide contributions in the past. An Advisory Committee of major donors to the Fund and others will help the Foundation set priorities for Fund grants.

The Lake Monticello Community Foundation will continue its efforts to benefit Lake Monticello specifically, following up on such projects as its popular All-Inclusive Playground, the kayak launch ramps and the Mobility Mat, and is currently evaluating several ideas for new Lake-centric projects. Donors will continue to be able to donate to the Foundation in general to support those projects.

CBS19 reporters did a great job covering the launch of the Fluvanna Action Fund, a new effort by the Lake Monticello Community Foundation. The Fund is an effort to boost the non-profits and community service organizations that help all of Fluvanna. The Foundation made a large contribution to kick off the Fund and will cover all operating costs, so every dollar donated to the Fund will go to help those in need in Fluvanna. As part of the Foundation, a 501(c)3, all contributions to the Fund will be tax deductible. The Foundation, meanwhile, will continue to focus on projects to benefit Lake Monticello, while also continuing to contribute to the Fund.

The Lake Monticello Community Foundation awarded a total of $8,000 in scholarships to Fluvanna high school students at a school assembly this month, based on their demonstrated commitment to community service. Recipients of $2,000 scholarships were Lily Calvo, Margeaux Cantagallo and Lent Maqani. Savannah Peterson and Molly Cook each received $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships were awarded by Foundation President Denise Maier (center, front).
