The World Hates the Disciples

John 15:18-25

18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[b] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’[c]

Commentary:
In this life, people will accuse you of being aggressive, unreasonable, angry, and many other adjective to discredit your character because you stand firm upon doing what is right. Let not your heart be troubled. Jesus Christ came to save the world and was crucified by the very people He aspired to save. So what makes the lives of those who follow him any different? Absolutely nothing, according to the scripture, for we are not greater than Him and will suffer because of His name and our will to follow him. Expect ill treatment! It is part of the process!

The Man of God and the Word of God

2 Timothy 3:10-17

10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [c]instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Commentary:
Use God’s word in the holy scriptures to live a life that is pleasing in God’s sight.

Wisdom versus Foolishness

Proverbs 9:7-12
7 The one who corrects a mocker
will bring abuse on himself;
the one who rebukes the wicked will get hurt.[a]
8 Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke the wise, and he will love you.
9 Instruct the wise, and he will be wiser still; teach the righteous, and he will learn more.
10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be many,
and years will be added to your life.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit; if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences.”

Commentary
A teachable spirit and humility allows for growth while pride leads to isolation. These atributes teach that correcting a mocker brings abuse, but instructing the wise increases their knowledge. Ultimately, fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

The Spirit versus the Flesh

Galatians 5:16- 21

16 I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy,[e] drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Commentary:
Walking by the Spirit is a daily, conscious decision that requires us to not fulfill the "lust of the flesh". We must die to the flesh through an intentional process of denying sinful desires, not engaging in selfish impulses, or partaking in worldly habits, in addition to refusing to allow our actions to be influenced or controled by desires of the flesh. Hence, we must walk in obedience to the Holy Spirit.

Religious syncretism is the blending of different religious beliefs, practices, and traditions into a new, unified system, or the merging of elements from one faith into another. Be careful! You are considered a religious syncretist if you claim to be a follower of Christ and practice Yoga, a spiritual practice associated with Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
