Meet Lyle. Lyle is a 1.5 (soon to be 2 in February), hypo genetic stripe leatherback male bearded dragon; bred by Dachiu bearded dragons, that came in today. He is currently 270 grams. He will be quarantined and fostered and up for adoption afterwards. Adoption location is Palmerton Pa. No shipping. Great eater and good with handling after he is out of the enclosure

So we got a call from one of the spcas to take this poor sulcata in. It was found dumped outside and given to them. They are not equipped for reptiles at this time so we have one of our fosters going to get him/her today. Obviously in extreme rough shape. Depending how she or he does in quarantine and if our foster may end up giving her a home or not; she may be available for adoption with no fee. We want her to have the best home possible where she can live out the rest of her life; which we would have no idea how long she may or may not have due to her condition. If we go that route; a sanctuary would be best or a home that understands her needs that will be able to give her what’s NEEDED.

Here’s a topic I don’t see covered very often. Let’s talk about interior decor of enclosures and why they are important. We see so many enclosures that are extremely bare. This is not good. We understand not everyone may have the knack for “interior designing” with reptile enclosures, but you can always ask for inspiration pictures by those who understand what’s needed and why.

Bare enclosures can cause stress. Why? Because the animal is out in the open causing them to feel insecure and vulnerable to potential prey. They need to have options of several places where they can go and hide if they choose, in order to feel secure and safe instead of being in a potential constant state of stress. We are not saying to over clutter everything; of course that can also depend on species. There are those that prefer heavy coverage and there are those that prefer moderate coverage. So please understand the species of reptile you have to fit those needs.

Bare enclosures will cause boredom. Yes; boredom. There is nothing to mentally stimulate them inside their enclosure. No actual substrate for digging or creating burrows (which will also enable them to hide to feel secure), nothing to climb on or utilize their muscles to keep them strong and fit. Many people forget mental enrichment is highly important. Imagine being in your bedroom and all you have to do is either lay in bed with a water bowl, food dish and maybe a chair and nothing else to do…. The more terrain options, and height levels, branches and so forth, the more opportunities they have to actually explore, keep fit, and mentally stimulated. The pictures below we do not own; and it is NOT to bash. This is simply a post to bring awareness to something that often isn’t talked about and to show examples of what we see all too often. Don’t be afraid to utilize the space; just utilize it “smartly”. Give your pet some natural interior designs; not Barbie doll houses, hammocks, and mini sofas. They will definitely appreciate NATURAL options such as logs, rocks, dirt, and so forth. These items are what they are built to understand and recognize. 😎
