🎆 STAY FIRE-SAFE THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE 🎆
As we prepare to ring in 2026, the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection wants to wish all Alaskans a happy and safe New Year!
Alaska is a vast state, and while some of us are buried in snow, others are experiencing very different conditions. We want to remind everyone that fire risk doesn't disappear just because it’s winter. ❄️
🌬️ Know Your Local Conditions
In many areas of the Mat-Su Valley and South Central, conditions remain windy and dry. High winds can carry embers from fireworks or outdoor fires into dry vegetation faster than you can react. Even with cold temperatures, the lack of snow cover in some areas means the grass and brush are still receptive fuels for a fire.
📜 Follow the Rules
Before you celebrate, please check your local, borough, and city ordinances regarding fireworks.
-Check First: Many areas have strict prohibitions or specific time windows for fireworks.
-Liability: Regardless of the time of year, if a fire is started by fireworks or negligent human activity, you can be held legally and financially liable for the costs of fire suppression and any resulting damage.
🤝 Be a Good Neighbor
We are collaborating closely with our partners at the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office and with local Boroughs and municipalities to ensure a safe holiday for everyone.
Please make smart choices:
-Avoid lighting fireworks in high winds.
-Have a water source or extinguisher nearby.
-Be mindful of neighbors, livestock, and pets.
Let’s start the new year on a high note by keeping our communities safe and our fire crews at home.
Happy New Year to All! 🎉
