Question
Dear Ryan,
Won’t some people take advantage of me if I treat them with empathy and compassion?
Judy
Answer
Yes.
But that’s ok, though, for a few reasons:
FIRST: It is inevitable.
Some people will take advantage of you no matter how you treat them.
If it is going to happen anyways, wouldn’t you rather live a life of compassion and empathy?
SECOND: Empathy is the most effective way.
No, empathy doesn’t work 100% of the time.
It does, though, work more often than any other approach.
THIRD: Compassion and empathy do not mean “anything goes.”
You can ask someone to follow the rules with compassion.
You can ask someone to leave with kindness.
You can even have someone arrested with empathy.
FOURTH: Hope is a choice.
We each get to choose whether we believe in humanity.
If we choose to see the good, will we sometimes look like fools? Yes. Of course!
Would you rather risk foolishness or live in the dark cloud of cynicism that assumes the worst in people? You have to choose.
Cynicism destroys the human spirit and corrupts the soul… and it is ruining our world.
You have to decide whether you believe in humanity.
Your answer has far-reaching implications for your life…
… and the world.
Peace,
Ryan
