The Solar Falcon Race Team The Solar Falcon Race Team is a unique program which teaches students how to design, manufacture, and race a solar-powered vehicle.

The Solar Falcon Race Team is an award wining engineering program taught at Palmdale High School. After branching off of the Falcon Academy of Sustainable Technologies, the program quickly became a hit with students. The SFRT races every July in the Solar Car Challenge and in 2016 achieved 3rd place. The team is currently working on the Solar Falcon 3.0 and plans to race at Texas Motor Speedway in July 2017.

Day 5 is done and so is the race. Despite suffering two flat tires about 10 miles apart and intense effort on all team members, the Solar Falcons received 2nd Place, just edged out by the Racer X² Solar Car Team team from Temple City by 14.9 miles. The Solar Falcons congratulate Racer X2 for an exciting race and look forward to seeing them next year. But the Solar Falcons didn’t just leave with a 2nd Place trophy. The team also received the Shannon Caraway Award for displaying the highest level of courage in the face of engineering obstacles. The 2026 Solar Falcon Race Team continues to demonstrate, regardless of the challenges facing them, the effort and perseverance to overcome the whatever obstacles they face.

Day 4 results are in and the Solar Falcons are back on top! With a total of 112.2 miles the Falcons took another 1st Place trophy for day 4. After 4 days of driving, the Falcons are back in 1st Place overall for the Solar-Electric division with a total of 279.8 miles. In addition, our division’s challenge was to purchase a small gift for a couple of intern judges for their birthdays. The team purchased two Hot Wheels car and modified them to resemble Solar Cars. For their efforts the team was rewarded with a safety vest signed by the Solar Cars Challenge interns. Day 5 is our final day of racing and the hopes for our best day yet. Look for our post after the awards banquet for the final results.

Day 3 results and we are BACK! We drove 59.5 miles yesterday giving us 1st Place for the day. While we are still in second overall, first is still in reach and the team is ready for another day of racing. We couldn’t do this with out the support from our sponsors. Thank you Air Force Research Laboratory, BHE Renewable, Clearway, Northrop Grumman, and our wonderful patrons Randy and Josie who have kept our team feed throughout the event. DAY 4!!!

Our Day 2 started with our team finding what could have turned into a serious problem before it became one. With their tireless efforts they worked to fix the issue. Despite a very late start, the team still drove more than 30 miles for the day. That put us in second place for the day, still holding 1st overall. Today looks very promising!

Day 1 of racing is in the books. With a total of 56.9 miles the Solar Falcons took 1st Place for day 1! Despite some mechanical issues the team pulled together to resolve the issue and took the car to its fastest speed of 45 MPH. Stay tuned for more updates.

The Solar Falcon Race Team is back for the 2026 Solar Car Challenge. After 3 days of hard work, overcoming obstacles, and determination, we are thrilled to announce we have passed Scrutineering.
