Connecting individuals and families with mental health resources, development, and community in Southern California's Antelope Valley and beyond
Live Oak Mental Wellness Project is an Antelope Valley-based nonprofit organization dedicated to elevating local mental health awareness while destigmatizing both mental illness and the seeking of necessary support. Our

Vision: AV residents will successfully integrate mental wellness strategies into daily life and be planted and deeply rooted in the right social community to enable them to thrive. Our 2024 Goal: To increase access to services by providing group-based mental health support. Community is crucial to emotional wellbeing. Together with our partners, we provide both peer-led support groups and clinician-led group therapy to share much-needed information and skills as well as to give space to form connections with others in our area who are in relatable situations.

My sincerest thanks to the Alliance for California Traditional Arts for inviting me to speak on grief at Antelope Valley CHIRLA, with extra special thanks to these two interpreters who made my presentation possible! (And thanks again to all of our attendees for your patience with this native English speaker whose second language is German.) Simultaneous interpretation is pure magic, and these two performed it flawlessly!

I’m so grateful to have been able to share tonight on signs and reminders, with emphasis on being intentional to remember our lost loved ones with, in David Kessler’s words, “more love than pain.“ I genuinely appreciated the opportunity to hear how others honor and incorporate their person into both daily life and special occasions, and it was an absolute treat to hear about the signs that help each of us lovingly remember those we’ve lost.

My presentation was followed by the building of mini-offrendas, and I thanked everyone for not only keeping their traditions alive for members of their own culture, but also for being kind enough to share such beautiful things with others of us who need them.

Thankful to be invited as a guest for today’s STEM Research presentations at SOAR Palmdale! Many of the high school students who presented today chose topics in the behavioral and neurological sciences, and it was so encouraging to see their curiosity at work.

Students, we are eager to see where your paths will take you in the coming years; do stay in touch!

If your preschooler struggles to manage their BIG feelings, join us next Wednesday for this month’s free workshop, Building Emotional Resilience Through Music!

As caregivers, we can create strategies in "cool moments" so they're ready to use in "hot moments" to help our little ones be successful and strengthen our bond with them. Learn about this and so much more Wednesday, May 27, 10-11am, at the All For Kids Family Resource Center in Palmdale.

We can’t wait to see you there!

I have Many Eyes, Wings, am Psychic, and I turn things brittle.

I fly fiercely into battle with my unearthly-long fingers outstretched, ready to take on any who dare attack me.

*rolls low*

My left wing is slashed in two by a gigantic creature wielding a scimitar. I am grounded, and I will have my revenge.

*rolls high*

I sense the intent of the gigantic creature and feint, leading it to believe that I am playing right into its paws, then race around to touch its Achilles tendon with my claws. My Many Eyes widen in triumph as the creature’s right leg crumbles under its weight…

Join us tomorrow (Sunday, May 17) from 12:30-3:30 for , a custom RPG dice game by featuring ’s murals at to raise money for the AV-based nonprofit . (link in Live Oak’s bio)

We had an absolute blast at yesterday’s Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health event at Antelope Valley College!!

Sharing a table with our new besties at Sycamores a child and family services agency, we folded Cootie Catchers (although the local GenX/Millenial consensus is that we all grew up calling them Fortune Tellers) for Emotional Regulation, promoted our workshops (bring your preschooler and join us May 27 at All For Kids in Palmdale!), and talked about what SALT1 does and how to get involved (come to our May 21 meeting from 3-5pm at the Palmdale Mental Health Center!).

Missed us yesterday? We’ll be back with our Emotional Regulation Cootie Catchers/Fortune Tellers tomorrow (Saturday, May 16) from 10-noon at Mesquite Elementary School’s open-to-the-public Health and Wellness Fair!

It was such a privilege and a delight to be invited back to Eastside High School’s annual Mental Health Awareness Week–we talked about the Wellness Wheel and had such fun making and using our ! (They MIGHT have also talked me into giving them my best proof of wanting to be Aretha Franklin when I grow up…)

We’ll have more Emotional Regulation Cootie Catchers for attendees of all ages at tomorrow’s Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Take Action event: Thursday, May 14, 10am-1pm at Antelope Valley College in the Library Plaza. We hope to see you there!

Why come out to Wall Fiends instead of staying home this Sunday?

Okay, stick with us here…
Connecting with others improves your health!

In these dark, expensive, busy times, staying home has become a go-to move.
It’s cheap, it’s easy, it doesn’t require pants.

But connecting with others in social environments is a proven way to help overcome burnout, loneliness, and even suicidal ideations.

According to the CDC, social connection can help reduce the risk of chronic disease and serious illness, including:
- heart disease
- stroke
- dementia
- depression and anxiety
(See “Social Connectedness” on the CDC’s website.)

In 2023, “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation: The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community,” was published, using 82 pages to cover the detriments of social isolation, including suicidality and self-harm, and the positive impacts of social connection on individuals and communities, including improved health and community safety.

Citing studies from 2003-2020, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy’s report states, “Social networks are getting smaller…social participation across several types of relationships has steadily declined. For instance, the amount of time respondents engaged with friends socially in-person decreased…20 hours per month”.

Staying home and disengaging from others might seem like recuperation,
but it’s hurting us.

This Sunday, don’t risk your health;
come roll some dice.

Come alone or bring some friends.
Connect with us and let’s have some fun!
