54 affordable units, wraparound services, and a place built intentionally for veterans and families rebuilding stability, hope, and long‑term success.

Meet Sarah Davis, Deputy Director at Stand Down — a leader whose compassion, expertise, and dedication have shaped our veteran‑focused mission for nearly a decade.

Sarah brings 9 years of nonprofit experience and a B.A. in Psychology from UNC Wilmington, along with a strong background in substance abuse and mental health treatment. Before joining Stand Down, she worked in both adult recovery programs and a children’s inpatient psychiatric facility, experience that now informs her trauma‑aware, veteran‑centered approach.

Sarah joined FHLC in 2017 as a Case Manager and quickly rose through the ranks — Lead Case Manager, Program Manager, and now Deputy Director. Her years working one‑on‑one with veterans ensure our programs remain grounded in empathy, accountability, and the daily support our veterans need to rebuild their lives.

Outside of work, Sarah loves spending time with her family, reading, traveling, kayaking, and rescuing animals — and yes, she will always stop to pet the dog. 🐾💙

Stand Down is proud to spotlight Sarah’s leadership, her heart for service, and her unwavering commitment to helping veterans find stability, dignity, and hope.

Stacey Brown came home from the Marine Corps carrying the same invisible wounds his father once brought back from Vietnam. Sleepless nights, PTSD, and the weight of survival pushed him toward anything that might quiet the pain.

Everything changed the day Roy Foster met him at the VA and asked, “Would you like to try a different way?” Stacey arrived at Stand Down House the next morning, finally slept, finally felt understood, and slowly rebuilt his life. He found healing, earned his degree, met his wife, and today serves as a counselor helping other veterans walk the same road he once did.

Stories like Stacey’s are why our Casino Night fundraising event matters — every hand played helps a veteran find their way home.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT 🔦🎉

Greg Torretta brings a lifetime of service to Stand Down. A proud U.S. Navy veteran, ⚓️ Greg served as a Second Class Air Traffic Controller during the Vietnam era, an experience that shaped his commitment to supporting those who served.

As Past President of the Stand Down Board, Greg guided the organization through pivotal growth and strengthened community partnerships. During his tenure, he played a key leadership role in kicking off the Village of Valor capital campaign, helping lay the groundwork for a transformational housing community designed to give veterans and their families a stable, dignified place to rebuild.

Professionally, Greg recently retired after a distinguished 40‑year career in financial services, including senior leadership roles at Morgan Stanley, Raymond James, Janney Montgomery Scott, and most recently RBC Wealth Management, where he served as Branch Director and Complex Marketing Director. His financial expertise and steady leadership have been invaluable to Stand Down’s long‑term stability and strategic direction.

But above all, Greg is driven by a deep, personal passion for helping veterans. He has spent more than 15 years mentoring service members through Mission United and remains a trusted advocate for veterans transitioning into civilian life. 🇱🇷
