We are not unlike a particularly hardy crustacean… With each passage from one stage of human growth to the next, we, too, must shed a protective structure.

Our passage into a new stage of development was initiated by our desire to stop using addictive substances. The values we lived by while using drugs no longer fit us. We need to shed our old skin and grow a new one that reflects our current worldview.

We are now, and always will be, in the stage of becoming, of trying to fulfill our changing dreams and aspirations. What we can accomplish at one stage of life is different from what we can handle at another. And yet an overall design is being shaped by all our endeavors. The more willing we are to shed yet another skin, the more centered, stable, and spirit-filled we'll become.

Do my actions fit my values? As I outgrow my values, I will release them. I will relish my growth today and celebrate my new skin.

There is a need to discover that we are capable of solitary joy and, having experienced it, know that we have touched the core of self.

To be alone with ourselves, undistracted by a friend's voice or TV or a good book, is not all that easy. We discover the joy of being and not always doing when we make a commitment to go within and seek the support of our Higher Power.

We are nurtured in times of quiet solitude as, little by little, we come to know and love ourselves more. We find lasting joy deep within ourselves rather than in outward success, other people's approval, or mood-altering drugs.

Deciding to leave our distractions for even a few moments will take courage; we may fear the unknown, certain that if we really get to know ourselves, we'll discover we're unlovable. Fear of the unknown is natural, but it lessens as we mature in our spiritual life. We are meant to know and love ourselves as we're known and loved by God.

Today I will quietly go within, and I will seek the self-assurance and joy that come from God.

True Selves
To thine own self be true.

If we committed su***de within the early years of recovery, we would be killing a stranger. We look back over our hopes, dreams, and ambitions of a few years ago, and they share little or no resemblance with those we have today. When we look at the people in our lives today, we see not only that they're different people - they are entirely different kinds of people.

The person who is emerging in our recovery is one we truly like. Where has that person been all our lives? We were too scared to reveal this self to the world. Our ego put it down and called it inadequate, ugly, and good-for-nothing.

Our program has helped us put a lid on our egos, and our true self is becoming a wonderful friend. We are no mistake; we are loved by our Higher Power, and we are capable of wonderful things.

I do not have to live my life according to the demands of others. I do not have to change my identity to please anything or anyone. It is to myself that I shall be true.

Within our dreams and aspirations, we find our opportunities.

Many great creative people - including Albert Einstein - have made important discoveries while daydreaming. We can also tap into the energy that comes from random associations and the unconscious. Through this, a new vision becomes possible.

Perhaps when we were at school, we were told to be alert and not to dream our lives away. Parents, too, may have discouraged our imaginative lives. Our culture tends to reward the rational and the pragmatic, and to consider the dreamer of marginal importance.

But let's not lose our power to dream. Our dreams can be much more than sexual fantasies born of our addiction. Our deepest wishes and hopes will often come to the surface when we are drowsing or simply letting the mind roam through life's possibilities. Many times, we stumble on the truth in our dreams. We need the energy and the vision that come with dreaming.

I welcome the gift of ideas that come to me while I let my imagination roam.

Self-made men are most always apt to be a little too proud of the job.

Ego gets us in trouble. Ego tells us that we are special and different. We are not that special. We are not that different. We are creatures who need relationships with others and with a Higher Power. Ego tells us the only relationship we need is with ourselves. There is fear behind the ego. Yes, an inflated ego comes from being afraid of others, of our Higher Power. This is why our egos grew so large during our active addiction. They were equal to our fear.

Recovery asks that we place ego and fear aside. We are to replace them with relationships and being of service to others. Why? For one thing, it keeps us sober. It also pushes us to learn from others. As we learn from others, we get closer to the truth, the home of our Higher Power. Truth lowers fear and demands that we put aside ego. These are living aids. We must remember: truth before fear, relationships before ego.

Prayer for the Day
Higher Power, help keep my ego in check. Help me to use the energy of my fear to reach out to others, to deepen my relationship with you. With you by my side, there is nothing to be afraid of. I choose you instead of my ego.

Today's Action
Today I will watch for how my ego gets me into trouble. I will beware of placing myself before my Higher Power.

You love me so much, you want to put me in your pocket. And I should die there, smothered.

Adult children often try to control people to keep them from moving away. To ensure that we won't be left alone, we might smother them with everything we have. Of course, we become obsessed with the person we're trying to control. But even worse, this caretaking behavior eventually leads us to become more addicted to the problem than to the person. We become good at solving other people's problems and wiping away their tears; that's our skill. And that's why we so often end up attracting and being attracted to people who have monumental personal problems.

Oftentimes, our controlling guarantees a relationship's failure. When we try to control those we love, we hurt ourselves and our loved ones. We must first aim to be healthy ourselves - only then can we learn to be part of a healthy relationship.

Today, I will let my loved ones face their own problems. I can love these people without fixing them.

Way down yonder by myself,
Oh, I couldn't hear anybody pray.

Most of us have experienced, at some time or another, how a simple word of encouragement from another person can suddenly ease our labor. We may have been struggling under the burden of what seemed like an insurmountable task, weighed down by fear, depression, shame, or self-hate.

Simple words of reassurance from one other person were all it took to turn us around. Hearing positive words from another gave us faith and confidence. We felt comforted, enlivened, and motivated to continue our efforts.

We, too, have the ability to make a difference by speaking simple words of encouragement. We only need to remember how far we have come and to trust the capacity of our spirits to grow and expand in unexpected and positive directions.

Today, I speak simple words of encouragement to others and to myself.

Turning adversity into opportunity is possible.

We didn't escape problems just because we came to a Twelve Step program. Problems still exist, whether it's a car that won't run, a neighbor who complains, a spiteful co-worker, or a family member who drinks or uses other drugs.

The difference is that now we can keep these situations in perspective. No problem means the end of the world. Before, even the smallest of problems sometimes devastated us.

Through listening to old-timers, we are beginning to realize that every situation offers us a unique opportunity to respond in more thoughtful, loving ways. Without this program, we might never have learned that having problems is the path to the growth and serenity we all seek. Now we turn to God for guidance, and through our trust in God, we see the problem transformed into an opportunity. To acknowledge life as being filled with opportunity rather than problems is a tiny shift in perspective that gives us huge rewards.

I will look for my opportunities today. My Higher Power will show me how to handle them. My reward will be growth.

Reflection for the Day
Still another common thread we invariably see among slippers is that many of them feel dissatisfied with today. "I forgot we live one day at a time," or "I began to anticipate the future," or "I began to plan results, not just plan." They seemed to forget that all we have is now. Life continued to get better for them, and, as many of us do, they forgot how bad it had been.

They began to think, instead, of how dissatisfying it was compared to what it could be. Do I compare today with yesterday, realizing, by that contrast, what great benefits and blessings I have today?

Today I Pray
If I am discouraged with today, may I remember the sorrows and hassles of yesterday. If I am impatient for the future, let me appreciate today and how much better it is than the life I left behind. May I never forget the principle of "one day at a time."

Today I Will Remember
The craziness of yesterday.

Thought for the Day

Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. We always get worse, never better. We are never cured. Our alcoholism can only be arrested. No matter how long we have been sober, if we try liquor again, we're as bad or worse than we ever were. There is no exception to this rule in the whole history of A.A. We can never recapture the good times of the past. They are gone forever. Will I try to recapture them?

Meditation for the Day
Your life has been given to you mainly for the purpose of training your soul. This life we live is not so much for the body as for the soul. We often choose the way of life that best suits the body, not the way that best suits the soul. God wants you to choose what suits the soul as well as the body. Accept this belief, and a wonderful molding of character is the result. Reject it, and God's purpose for your life is frustrated, and your spiritual progress is delayed. Your soul is being trained by the good you choose. Thus, the purpose of your life is being accomplished.

Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may choose what is good for my soul. I pray that I may realize God's purpose for my life.
