🎃While you're gearing up for Halloween, whether you're decorating, prepping for Trunk-or-Treats, or having a party, here are some tips on how to have a wildlife friendly Halloween!🎃
🕸Check fake spiderwebs! Animals frequently get entangled in fake webbing, especially if it is stretched over any gaps where flying animals may pass through. Check your webbing and make sure that it is not stretched over possible paths, and check it frequently to make sure no animals are entangled.
🪟Decorate your windows! Window strikes are a common reason for bird patient intakes, and decorating your windows is a way to help prevent birds from flying into glass. Birds will often see the reflection of the outdoors in the window and mistake it for a clear flight path, so adding festive stickers, window clings, and paintings can disrupt that reflection while adding decor to your home.
💡Reduce overnight light usage! Late October is peak migration season, and having holiday lights up all night can disrupt the flight paths of migratory birds, leading to confusion and disorientation. Consider setting up a timer for your lights to turn them off late at night to help keep our migrating visitors safe!
🧪Avoid chemical preservatives! While jack-o-lanterns and pumpkins are fun to have out, avoid using chemiclas to make them last longer. Chemical preservatives can lead to illness in many animals, so enjoy your pumpkins while they last, and make sure you dispose of them properly at the end of the season!
🍬Clean up your trash! Whether it's candy wrappers or decorations, make sure that you are not leaving anything out in the environment. Pick up your wrappers and properly dispose of them, and make sure you clean up your decor at the end of the holiday!
