Allegany Franciscan Ministries is a non-profit Catholic organization focused on improving the overall health status of individuals through increasing access to health services and information. Guided by the tradition and vision of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, Allegany Franciscan Ministries provides grants to organizations in three regions of Florida: Miami-Dade County, Palm Beach, Martin a

nd St. Allegany Franciscan Ministries strives to be a catalyst for systemic change, committing resources and working collaboratively to promote physical, mental, spiritual, environmental and cultural health and well-being in these communities. Allegany Franciscan Ministries is a supportive health corporation of CHE Trinity Health. Allegany Franciscan Ministries traces its roots to the late 1920’s when the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany began health ministries in Florida. The congregation was founded in 1859 to provide education for children in the Allegany area of southwestern New York State. The Sisters came to Miami Beach in 1927 to administer the newly established Allison Hospital, later re-named St. Petersburg and soon bought Faith Hospital, renaming it St. Anthony’s Hospital; two years later they opened St. In West Palm Beach beginning in 1929 the Sisters ministered at St. Mary’s Hospital and the nearby Pineridge Hospital, the only hospital in the area serving the African-American (then Negro) community. In every case, these hospital ministries were devoted to meeting the needs of their poor, oppressed and disenfranchised sisters and brothers. Over the years the ministries in each area grew and changed, always keeping the values of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at their heart. In the mid to late 1990’s, as the healthcare environment changed, the Sisters looked for ways to continue their ministries in the Florida communities served by the hospitals. In 1997 the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany joined with the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of Providence to form and sponsor Catholic Health East, a multi-institutional Catholic health system with ministries in 11 eastern states from Maine to Florida. At the same time, the Sisters divested of certain assets through their Florida healthcare partnerships, creating the base for the formation of foundations in three regions of Florida – Miami-Dade, Tampa Bay and Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie Counties. In January 1999, the Board made its first distributions -- $1,025,000 to seven organizations. That same year, the first CEO was hired and an office was opened in Clearwater; regional offices were opened in Palm Beach County in 2001 and in Miami-Dade in 2003. Allegany Franciscan Ministries now has seven employees, in four offices. Throughout its grant-making history, Allegany Franciscan Ministries has made a concerted effort to develop strong relationships with grantees and the non-profit and funding community in each region and across the state.

We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and investment in leadership. Sabbaticals provide a unique opportunity not only for executive leaders to rest, reflect, and renew, but also for organizations to strengthen leadership capacity and build resilience across the team.

Through our sabbatical program, we are excited to support this season of growth and renewal for both Robert and Abe Brown Ministries, Inc. We look forward to seeing the insights, learning, and strengthened capacity that emerge from this experience.

Wishing you a restorative and enriching sabbatical, Robert!

Join us for our next Wellness Lunch & Learn: The Power and Potential of Co-Leadership featuring the Policy Partners' Co-Directors: Carrie Y. (Hepburn) Brown, Roxanne Fixsen, J.D., and Bro John Muhammad.

This session will explore co-leadership — a model in which organizational responsibilities are intentionally shared among two or more people. During last month's Wellness Lunch & Learn, nonprofit CEOs preparing for our Sabbatical Program shared their concerns about stepping away and what they hoped to gain by doing so.

Co-leadership directly addresses the concerns discussed during our last session. You don't want to miss this candid discussion detailing the benefits, challenges, and real world approach to this practice. Come prepared with your questions.
