Last Thursday, we celebrated a powerful milestone at the College of the Desert Nursing Pinning Ceremony as 21 OneFuture Scholars from the first expanded cohort of nursing students officially received their pins and prepared to enter the healthcare workforce! 👏
Just two years ago, OneFuture Coachella Valley’s Healthcare Workforce Leadership Roundtable – alongside our partners Eisenhower Health, Desert Care Network, Desert Healthcare District, and IEHP – came together to address the growing nursing shortage in the Coachella Valley. Through a multi-million dollar investment and regional collaboration, the partnership helped expand College of the Desert’s nursing program and create opportunities for more local students to pursue careers in healthcare.
Yesterday’s ceremony was more than a celebration – it was the result of a community working together to build pathways from education to meaningful careers right here in the Coachella Valley.
Stories like Maritza Avila’s remind us why this work matters. Featured recently in the College Futures Foundation’s “Our Golden Ticket” report, Maritza returned to school after decades away from the classroom while balancing work, caregiving, and life’s challenges. Yesterday, she crossed the stage as a newly pinned nurse, representing the strength, determination, and promise of local students when barriers are removed and support systems are built around them.
As Michele Finney of Desert Care Network shared, creating a strong local healthcare workforce is about more than filling jobs – it’s about ensuring continuity of care, strengthening our community, and investing in the future of the region.
Congratulations to the Class of 2026 nurses. Your community is proud of you, and your journey is already making an impact. 👏
