Meet Karen Mendoza, a OneFuture HCC intern! ✨ This summer, Karen interned with the Palm Springs Art Museum, where she helped plan the museum’s annual Día de los Mu***os event. Her work focused on helping create a welcoming experience where families could participate in art workshops and learn more about Día de los Mu***os traditions. 🎨💀🌼

Karen’s experience reflects her passion for supporting others and making resources more accessible. Growing up in the Eastern Coachella Valley has shown her how important it is for people to feel comfortable asking for help without shame or judgment.

Karen hopes to pursue a career in mental health, particularly working with underserved communities. 💫 She wants to help the Hispanic community connect with the support they need and use her future career to remind people that they deserve to be heard and supported.

OneFuture partners with Health Career Connection (HCC), a nonprofit organization, to provide students pursuing a health career with a paid summer internship. 📣 Stay tuned for the Summer 2027 Internship Program – applications open fall 2026!

Congratulations to OneFuture Alumna, Maritza Avila! 👏

A proud Indio High School graduate, Maritza has reached an exciting milestone by graduating from College of the Desert’s Nursing Program with her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)! 🎓💫

As a COD RN Expansion Scholar, Maritza was among the nursing students who benefited from the RN Expansion initiative – a collaborative investment by the Healthcare Workforce Leadership Roundtable to expand local nursing pathways and strengthen the future healthcare workforce in the Coachella Valley. ☀️

Before becoming a nurse, Maritza spent nearly 20 years working as a Veterinary Technician and Treatment Manager, building skills in critical thinking, compassionate communication, and patient care that have helped shape her journey into nursing. 🩺

Now a newly licensed Registered Nurse, Maritza is continuing her education toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) while pursuing her goal of building a career in acute care, with a particular interest in emergency or critical care nursing.
